Root anyone try to port Android L?

hey modhatter,

the recovery patch file is just a leftover remnant, it doesnt actually do anything. its removed in the updated zip files im working with, just ignore it. the only thing that wont let you get back to recovery through adb is the fact that the phone freezes up from services dying and dex2oat stalling, so you have to be quick with what you try to do.

on another related note:
from what i gather, the big problem around the display is the fact that I am using phenom's cm11 kernel(which is amazing by the way :) ), which probably uses caf display drivers? (i have no clue, just what i read on the interwebz.) people are saying that we would need to revert to aosp style display drivers in kernel to get output on the screen, if anyone can shed some more light on that and is good with kernel work please lemme know.

I'm not too familiar with kernels either, but I'm learning as fast as possible. The kitchen just isn't enough for this kind of work. (Sounds like its high time that I install Ubuntu) I'll see what kind of info I can pull about drivers and how surfaceflinger operates, and report back any useful info that I can muster up. :D

Edit: I think this is worth a quick glance. Its that thing rbheromax was referring to, about ADB complaining about libs, and at the end, it even gives a string. This was in eclipse I'm guessing. awesome! glad to hear ive got some more help on this. welcome to the effort lol

i did a little bit of looking and apparently (dont quote me on this) fiddling with include/linux/msm_mdp.h and drivers/video/msm/mdp4_overlay.c in the cm kernel source will bring it back closer to aosp? those are the only relevant looking commits i could find so far in the htc one m7 source from poondog on xda.

by unpacking zimage from phenom's slimkat and using it instead of the zimage from cm11 i got further. instead of a blank screen or screen full of lines, it displays the cm logo clear as day from the ramdisk. no bootanimation yet, but im close, i can feel it. im gonna try to recompile a kernel with the tweaks above and see what happens.

edit: ill upload something soon. gonna try some stuff before i do.

So... I ran into a problem. A friend of mine loaned me Ubuntu 12.04, and well, after 9hrs of trying to install it to a separate hard drive and dual boot it, and having it tear my windows 7 master boot record a new one every time... Come to find out, its kernel base is i686 (x86) and won't play fair with my 7 x64 OS because its EFI. (pretty sure I need x64 regardless) So it might be a while before I can get a build environment up and running. I need an 8gb+ download for Ubuntu x64, and the only interwebs I have is 3g. Not sure if I can pull off that much loitering at any of the WiFi hotspots I frequent. And Virgin Mobile, a few months ago, decided to block all UDP traffic to/from my phone. There website says they reserve the right to "shape" traffic, but they are not shaping it, they're out right illegally blocking it. I've checked repeatedly, and the ports get closed on their end every time. I tried running a proxy, no dice, way too slow and constant disconnects. And forced encryption only gets me bits per second, which would take years. So, torrenting is out. I'm trying to figure something out, but at the moment, I'm at a big loss.

8gb for ubuntu?! Um... no the 64bit is only around 800mb. Also when installing Ubuntu it gives you the option to install aside of Windows and have a screen where you can select which os to boot, so yes it takes over your MBR but for good reason. Sounds like your friends disk is bogus somehow. 12.04 isnt that great anyway, 13 is pretty nice.
As for your Windows install, you can have either x86 or x64 on 64bit chips but x86 wont use any ram above 3gb. Also you can have 32bit Ubuntu beside 64bit Windows without issue...I do
If you download Ubuntu iso put it on a flash drive. Much less hassle than cd

Only 800mb you say?! Whoa, there must be something else on that disc that shouldn't be there AT ALL... Well, that's very creepy. I'm so digging into that disc. Thank you so much for the info! I'll go ahead and snag Ubuntu 13 x64, I have 4gb of ram in there. That'll only take me about 45min at the worst Wi-Fi spots I know of, easily doable. There is hope again! :D I can't wait to unpack that disc... Knowing my luck it'll either be something really boring like spyware, or something super fun like a bunch of trojans and worms, and if I'm really lucky something alureon. I'll be up and running by tomorrow! Any advice about installing? Just pop it in, tell it where to be, let it do it's thing and grab windows boot loader? (grub right?) Also, should I put it as the highest priority in my boot order? I'm on a gigabyte motherboard, GA-970A-D3 r3.0.

Pretty much nail on the head there. Ubuntu should make itself first boot order (since your MBR is gone already) but after install you should get a pretty purple screen on reboot that asks what to boot and how. Its nifty ^_^

Use this to make your bootable usb: Linux Live Usb grub should be automagic after installed Ubuntu

That disk sounds dangerous...but fun! Lol good luck

I am not a dev. Just simply wondering how the port is going.

well, see, the thing is, its not going. i had to get rid of my awe, so im out of the game. unless anyone else is working on it, and by the looks of things, its probably going to be best to wait for official L sources and then hack around the gpu problems.

it was nice hanging with you guys, hope to see you in the future on here.
