Anyone using Google Voice for visual voice mail?

Seems like you have to talk very slowly and clear to get it to transcribe correctly, or with only a few mistakes, and most people do not do either.

I mostly use Google Voice so that I can ignore messages in the order that I want, simply by looking at them in a list.

I don't need a surgically accurate transcription to tell me that I don't need to listen to the message. The point is to get just enough of an idea of what they were trying to tell me that I know exactly how to pretend that I was paying attention.

That the messages are hilariously wrong is merely a bonus.

I'd just like to chime in and say that as wonderful as Google's applications are, some of them, actually require the user to provide feedback to Google. With as many inflections, tones, pitches, languages, and people that are in this world, the product is only as good as the information that is put into it.

Having said that, Google really does rely on the help of it's users. If you go to www.voice.google.com and login, you'll see that every voice mail you have has to the bottom right corner a question that says, "Transcript useful?" and next to it, two boxes, a check mark for yes or an X for no.

If you take a few minutes to help submit some of your information, it can only help.

He has a point, HOWEVER.....

IMO the transcriptions arent broken. Please dont report them. XD
 
I really dig visual voicemail. It's not 100% accurate, but usually it isn't worse than I'd say 80-85%. Like other said, I can generally get the gist, if not see the whole point, of the call.

Screening callers you don't know is an option in GV, you have to set it to not do that as I don't unless it's craigslisters ;) Pretty great feature, though!

Google + Android is the future. Now if they only had a data only phone, so I could voip GV for free... /fantasize
 
I've used Google Voice since I got my first OG Droid two years ago and I love it. The transcriptions are usually close enough to know whether I need to call back immediately or if it can wait.

I have been thinking about switching to GV for all my texting, and I can deal with the lack of MMS, but...I've heard that GV can sometimes take a while to send texts. I use my phone primarily for business, so it's critical that I get texts promptly. This could have been when GV was in its infancy, so it may have improved since then.

Is it possible to use Handcent with GV SMS? I prefer the customization of Handcent, but haven't really messed around with settings in GV for texting.
 
Anybody else have the issue when you try to activate Google Voice Voice Mail on your TB, you dial the *71(plus the GV number), and all you get is the pop up message "call not sent"? (Yes, my cell number is linked to the GV account and I am entering everything that the GV activation prompt says to enter.)
 
Okay, here's what's driving me crazy now: I'm reading here and on a bunch of other threads that I can get Google Voice to send me a txt alert when I have a message. But when I go to the Settings page > Voicemail tab, the only option is to have an alert sent via email. Maybe the text message option is no longer available?

I'd love if somebody else could check and see what they see.

Have you checked menu/settings from within the app on your phone?

I did, but that appears to be for receiving texts, not for sending them automatically.

I figured out a workaround, though. I set up a new rule in Gmail, so that when I get an email from Google Voice, it forwards via (phone number)@vtext.com.. What Goog sends as an email to that address shows up as a text message on my phone.

I know this seems like a PITA workaround, but it actually works great. I get 250-ish emails most day, so sending those voicemail messages via email alone just wasn't working....
