Anyone using Google Voice yet?

I am curious to know how you were entering numbers when placing phone calls while using GV. My understanding is that in order for the GV service to be used you must enter a 10 digit phone number i.e the area code must be included when dialing. I did some testing and found that when I dialed using only 7 digits my Sprint number was used but when I used the 10 digits my GV number was used.

When I first got my GV number and tested it, I called my mom a few times. She is in another state, so I know I was using the 10 digit phone number. What I would do was check my minute usage with Sprint, then call her via GV and talk for about 10 minutes. After hanging up, I would then go check my minute usage again and it would show I'd used 10 minutes of call time. Also, when doing international calling it counts against my 450 minutes as well.

By the way, how were you verifying whether you were using your cell or GV number?

using the GV app on the android you can initiate a sms message from your GV number.

also if you have a PPC phone, there is a decent GV app for windows mobile. im using it on the PRO2. its called "one dialer".

I don't have Android yet, but am looking forward to having a native Google Voice app (I have Windows Mobile now). I was hoping Android phones would let me initiate a text message from my contacts and have it sent via my Google Number. Are you saying this is not possible?

I'm a Windows Mobile user (for another month, then switching to Android). I think I tried One Dialer before but for some reason, quit using it.

I assume when you start a text message with the Google Voice app on Android, you are able to pick a number from your contacts, instead of just typing the number you want to send to?

Sprint views these as voice calls. I checked my usage this morning and noted the minutes used. I then made 3 calls to three different numbers using Google Voice. I re-checked my usage an hour later and the three calls showed up and "shared" minutes were used.

The good news about this is that I have the Pick3 option and will now call Sprint to have them add this particular number to the Pick3 thus giving me unlimited outgoing calls on my Hero!

Note that when you use GV you are not using your cell number or even your GV number but some obscure phone number generated by GV, the number is the same no matter what number you actually call. You can see this number on your screen when you initiate the call and you can confirm it on Sprints website under 'usage'. My GV number was displayed on the caller ID and not the obscure number which is very cool.

All in all I'm pleased with it. There is a tiny bit of voice delay that I notice bnut certainly not a deal breaker.

How did you get the Pick 3 option? I'd never heard of it before I read your post, but did a little research on it afterwards. Seems some people were able to contact the "retentions" group and get it added for free, but since they now have unlimited mobile to mobile I wonder if they would still give it.

I don't know if they still offer it but I've had it since the beginning of the year and got it just as you described, called retentions and pretty much begged for it. They used to charge $5.00/mo for it but if you begged hard enough you got it for free.

I have google voice set up as my default dialer and sms app so all I do is go to the people app (address book) click on the contact I want to call or txt, and then click on send message for txting or call for calling.

I was calling my house phone and watching the caller id screen. When I would dial my house phone with only 7 digits the caller id would show my sprint number (the call screen just has the stock green android with no mention of google voice) but when I would call using 10 digits the caller id would show my google voice number (also i get "calling with google voice" on the call screen). Again just confirmed this. Now I don't know how Sprint is logging and treating the call. I haven't talked to them.

I tried like everything to get it from Retentions last month when I got my Hero after 9 years with Sprint. I even threatened to back out during the 30 days and go with the Droid that I was holding in my hand at the time. I couldn't get anywhere. They swore that now they had free mobile-to-mobile it wasn't even available to them to give to people. They kept telling me how much better free m-to-m was. It didn't seem to register when I repeatedly told them that the elderly relative I use the most minutes on doesn't have a mobile phone. I got the same story from a supervisor. I finally gave up. I'd be interested in knowing if anyone HAS gotten Pick 3 for the first time during the last month.

I know this is an old thread, but rather than clutter up the forum with a new thread, I thought I would add my question here.

How can I change the gmail address that I have assigned to my Google voice acct?

I have been using Google Voice for some time, and have it set to a different Gmail address than my Hero's Gmail address. I purposely created a new gmail address for my Hero so I wouldn't carry over my Gmail contacts to the Hero.

Now when I added the Google Voice app to my Hero, it askes me to select an account to use with it. It shows the acct that I created specifically for the Hero. When I click on that, it says "Not Subscribed" the Google acct is not enabled for Google Voice.

Can any one help me figure this out? Thanks

I am happy with the way I have my contacts set up on the phone.

Ok, I got it figured out, but after all this effort trying to get it set up, it seems the GV app dials (760) 537-0537 rather than the GV phone # I have as mine, and assigned as one of my "pick 3" with Sprint, totaly making the GV app useless to me. I found this after making a few test calls and looking at the call detail on the Sprint website. I "Googled" that (760) phone number, and found others commenting on the same thing.

Guess I'll just continue to use the GV speed dial I have been using for my NON mobile to mobile calls.

I would encourage other GV app users (especially those using their GV # as one of their Sprint Pick 3 #s) to see if your GV app is doing the same thing.

Okay so call and change one of your pick 3 number to the number it dials?????????

I have both my GV # and the weird number it dials as a pick 3 - works fine for me.

Mine does the same thing, I just told Sprint to use the strange GV number as one of my Pick3's. The number never changes so it's all good.

Yes, this is a possibility, although I have two land line numbers that I need to keep as pick 3 choices, and from what I have read, the weird number the GV app dials changes from time to time. Others have said they ended up with large Sprint bills due to this.

You did not have to create a new one, just turn off sync for the contacts.

Thanks! Didn't know that. Please tell me where to find that setting. Oh! I think I found it. Settings, Data sync, google, contacts. I unchecked "contacts"

What is the Gmail item there? It is currently checked. I have my gmail coming into what I think I have seen referenced as the stock mail app on my Hero. If I uncheck that, what are the ramifications? Also, I don't use any calendars that I sync, so I guess I could uncheck calendars also?

thanks again

Thanks for the great thread.

Can anyone explain the international calling? do you pay any extra to call international?
Thanks

Well I can't speak with great authority on this because I don't work at Google, and my experience is pretty cut and dry. I'll just tell you what I believe and I have experinced.

The weird number the Google Voice App dials seems to be regional - I see forum posts talking about different area codes and things like that. However in my area, Idaho, the number has always been the same. I've had two Hero's and hard reset a few times but the number always stays the same. Interestingly it's a Boise number, even though GV has numbers local to my area. I imagine that the number changes depending upon usage - so this sucks for people in more populated area's because the number will cycle more often.

This is how I have mine set up:

I use GV for both calls (GV #) and voice mail - so calls to my Sprint number get forwarded to GV for voice mail. I receive texts of the transcripts and use the app to listen to the messages. This works very nicely because then I can have different messages for different groups of people (this is why Google Contacts is so nice, and you can set it on your phone so it only syncs the people you want) my family and friends hear a personal message - while everyone else hears my business message. Some family/friends and even some of my clients of their own personal message. This is nice for business clients because it makes them feel real special.

For calls:

Most of my calls are incoming calls - so I have GV set to display the callers #. If the caller is calling from a mobile then Sprint still uses Any Mobile; if they call from a land line mins are used. However most of my callers are calling from mobiles so it doesn't effect me that much.

Outgoing calls are a bit more complicated but this is what works for me. I have my GV# and the weird # the app dials as pick 3 contacts. I have the App set to ask on every call. If I am calling back a client, potential client, a business or something like that then I use GV and the call is free. If I am calling family/friends I use my Sprint number. I use my Sprint number for family and friends because most of them have mobile phones anyways and a lot of them already have my Sprint number added to their free calling plans.

Because the way I have it set up I still end up using some mins but normally it's less then a 100.

As far as you questions about the Contacts and Calendar sync. If you are not using it then you should be able to safely uncheck them. However if you don't mind is there a particular reasons you are not using it? You can adjust the contacts so it only syncs the contacts you want (versus syncing every weird person you've wrote or recieved an email from) and you can do it on the fly. There is a few other benifits for me at least my main gmail account synced with this phone - such as search history.

I got an invite from our benevolent overload Google to try out their new google voice feature. I haven't set up anything yet, because 1. i dont know if I really need it 2. I am not sure 100% of what it does. Is anyone running GV currently for their HTC hero and if so, what is your take on the service? Thanks!
I am running GV. It's ok I guess. When people send you text messages it will go to your stock messages app and GV app on the phone aswell. That part is annoying. I think there are some settings in GV to stop this. I will keep the GV number, but I only tell people to use the number if its an emergency. I think its pointless. But oh well I have to numbers for my cell phone.

I went into the Google Voice app on my phone and set the refresh to never. That means when I get a text message, it comes to my default messaging app and that is it, no dupes.
