Anyone using their Evo to tether to pc via USB?

i think we're confusing sprint's hot spot, wi-fi tethering with a paid app that allows tethering.

Ryan might be. I know what each one is and how they work. Just couldn't get past the errors for 3g - USB tethering.

Now I'm working on Bluetooth tethering EVO & Laptop.

I moved to the EVO from a Moment. I used Azilink on the moment to connect via USB to my laptop and get internet. When I got the EVO, I tried Azilink and at first, it did not work. Then I set the pop up that appears when you plug in the USB to 'HTC Sync', ran Azilink on the EVO, ran the script for ADB and OpenVPN as administrator on my laptop, and boom, internet, all sites.
Google 'Azilink' and read the Moment tethering thread for all the gruesome details. It took far longer to write this post than to get online via Azilink after you set it up.

ahhh so you are a linux user too? i run ubuntu 10.04 ... but i tether to a motorola droid on verizon... i like the linux tethering... easytether/pdanet charge 30 bucks (one time) for the full version that allows secure connections... phuck winblows

i am reading up on this thread because my gf might get an evo on sprint or the new droid or the droid x... her windows machine got a virus... i told her i'd fix her computer so viruses won't penetrate her system as easily... hope she likes ubuntu

I was able to connect to the internet on my laptop using wired internet sharing then I unplugged it. An hour later I tried again and it wouldn't work. i tried repeatedly for more than an hour and then gave up. I installed PDAnet but it is really slow. I instead used the Unrevoked root app. and connected using wireless hotspot. You can use the Evo's internet sharing that way and still connect the phone to the laptop to charge or be used as a disk drive. It was much faster this way and seemed to use the full speed of the available 3G signal unlike PADnet which made me feel like I was on a 2G phone again. Maybe I did something wrong with it. I installed the x64 version on Win7.

I just got all of this squared away. I am not using PDAnet, but every time I tried to connect my cpu and phone, I got error 67.

Someone above suggested/mentioned that you can have the phone on "charge mode" while tethering. The second I changed the USB mode from "Tether" all the issues stopped, and I could connect. Just enable 'tethering' through whichever application you use, and disable on the phone.

Teathering works like a champ... I've done it twice now on two seperate occations on two seperate computers... here are my directions.. hope it can help you out.

You need to DL the free version of PDANet on your EVO.

On your computer: First Dl this: http://www.htc.com/us/support/evo-sprint/downloads/

Then DL the appropriate version of this:
http://junefabrics.com/android/

make sure your computer downloads the drivers for the EVO, did it automatically for me after I installed HTC Sync.

connect your phone via USB and select just charge.

you may need to go Settings--> Applications--> Development... and set "debugging" as appropriate (cant remember if its on or off)

open PDANet on your phone.

im no expert and i had no trouble teathering via this route. It works really nicely!

and for the person asking about the plan... i use the Everything Data 450 for 80$

I did this and it worked for me. So if i wanted to connect to another computer I would just have to insta pdanet on that computer then connect?

Yes, I had it on both my desktop and my laptop and it worked just fine.

Though PDANet has a trial period and when that runs out they want like $30 for the full plan. I'm using the free trial of EasyTether which has been working just as well so far. I think the full version of it is just $10 or so.

is this stock form of tethering any faster/better than the full version of easytether? i already bought the $10 version

When does it expire? I've been using it almost 2 months and its still working fine. I thought with the free version you were just blocked from secure sites unless you paid for full version.

If I enable internet sharing for any reason

Here's the catch- DO NOT ENABLE INTERNET SHARING WHEN USING PDANET. Just plug it into your usb port and ignore the "tell me what to do" menu. PDAnet has its own drivers and once you start selecting' internet sharing' or whatever then PDAnet can't see your phone.

PDAnet is awesome! Used it for the first time the past couple weekends. It occasionally loses connection, but that was tolerable.

One thing I do love is that text message program that comes up like an IM on your computer, so you don't have to text on the phone. VERY happy with it.

We had an "incident" at work with non-work related activities on the PC's there about a month ago. Since then, i use PDANet free exclusively from my laptop to stay off the company network while i surf the web, fix customer PC's, and IRC chats. It's literally helped save my job from boredom (and will be my downfall if i get caught lol). I notice that it tends to lag more at the end of day than any other time, dunno if that's a network congestion issue or what, but it's pretty consistent daily for me. Other than that, it certainly rocks! Would be even better if it worked with Ubuntu.

That's why im using easy tether. Works great with Ubuntu. In fact I'm using it right now.

No problem. The problem I didn't mention is that I'm using a USB connection. I don't think it works wirelessly.

i had the same problem. i looked everywhere but cant find the exact reason. my solution was to keep adjusting the way it connects when you tether it. my settings are.. i keep it as a disk drive. also very important... go to accounts and sync in the homescreen menu/settings. disable backround data. i do this while im tethered and i can keep it up with no disconnects for 2 days or more. using easy tether pro.

also set phone to send voice calls to voicemail. its ddty mode or something like that..

I've been prety happy using my EVO to teather to my laptop. I use Sprints Wireless HotSpot on my EVO, and it works great. I'm in my apartment just north of Phoenix now and this is what I got on a couple tests using speakeasy.net/speedtest on Sprints 3G:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 1930 kbps (241.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 479 kbps (59.9 KB/sec transfer rate
Last Result:
Download Speed: 2231 kbps (278.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 593 kbps (74.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Speeds seem to be the same on USB or wireless tether.

That's interesting that USB tethering is not faster than Hotspot-ing. I have the Sprint Hotspot service too, and when it seems slow, I will connect the USB cable, assuming it to be faster, but never being certain that it was faster. Now I know that there's not much, or any, difference in speed. Mystery solved.

They are about the same in speed, the differences are in fact just how the network works. Not all connections to the towers are treated the same and not all wireless cards are the same. You can take two radios of the same type, and get two widely different speeds.

Welcome to 3g.

I just want to be able to tether my iPad from my EVO without having to pay the absurd $30/month for the hotspot...

I tried pda net with 6.29.651.5 software and was only able to get about 70kb downloads with PDANet free edition using a usb cable. I used to have a HTC Touch Diamond and was able to use PDA Net and get about 1.2mb downloads with that via the usb cable. Also with windows mobile 6.x their was a setting to make it get the higher speeds, i guess the android version does not have that setting.

See pda net free edition is worthless

Then you need to root and use wireless tether. Its simple to do and works well. I use that for my iPad.

refuse to root as it stops all over the air updates. So i would not recommend to root any device. and keep in mind their are several different software version updates that all have the same new 6.75.651.x on it but have a different file name based on the software you have. so lets say one person releases a new custom rom for one version of the phone it may not work on another version of the phone. I have an evo 6.29.651.5 purchased best but nov 5 2010 and it is hardware version 4. now their is also another hardware version 4 that has software 6.30.xxx.x with a new camera. even though both are hardware 4 the newer software 6.30.xxx.x will make my camera useless. so dont custom rom this phone as it may brick it, or disable
