I use the k-9 email app free from the market, was pretty easy to setup my aol account from there. I havent used the stock email app as I have grown used to k-9 since having it on my captivate. I think k-9 has a nicer user interface.
I just set up my aol account on the stock one to see how it looked. I dont like how if you have multiple accounts you have to keep pressing account then choosing the account I want to go in. with k-9 the main app page lists all the accounts and number of emails. If you do decide to use k-9 or another email app, after you have already setup the stock one make sure you go into the stock app then tap menu-more-settings-notification settings and uncheck email notifications otherwise you will get double notifications for each email
