Root AOSP ROM differences/plus no Oxygen md5 check?

saltire

Android Expert
Couple of questions in one. First, downloaded Oxygen but noticed there's no md5 to check download against so wondering if there was one buried in one of the thread posts on xda? Happy to search if someone knows there is one

Second, and i know ROM selection is subjective but interested to find out what the main diffs between CM7, Oxygen, Redux and GV are? So far i've gathered that Oxygen seems to be an isolated build, but am a bit confused about the others as they seem to be a bit more closely related to each other (absolutely no offence meant to any of the devs with that comment, respect and gratitude to them all :)). Just wondering what some of the main differences are?

Gv is based on cm so its very close. Both oxygen and redux incorporated some cm features. I don't think there's much difference. Oxygen is more up to date.

Md5? Don't see the point with Roms. Unlike a bas radio flash, a bad Rom file won't brick anything. In fact it won't even flash. "Installation aborted (bad)" so don't worry about it

Oxygen it is then - just wondering if you guys have any kernel recommendations over the linux one that comes with the ROM?

All android kernels are Linux. Android is Linux based.

Use the default one with oxygen. Other aosp kernels don't always work with the oxygen camera

Was just about to say nevermind as can't use the ManU kernels with Oxygen anyway

@SUroot - thanks, was referring to 'linux' more in terms of being a 'stock' kernel rather than a dev kernel, if you see what i mean

Agreed. I decided that as Oxygen was the most popular AOSP ROM that I'd not spent much time with I should at least give it a proper play. My initial reaction, after setting up, is that it reminds me of Redux - rather snappy, a bit more basic than CM, but not completely bare bones. It's probably the dialler that really made me think of Redux ;)

Not sure whether the lack of a trackpad wake will drive me mad, but will try to give it at least a day or two.

There's a mod for that I think on xda somewhere.... ill look for it later. I may be wrong
Now you mention it I think I saw something like that the other day. I'll have a search when I have a real computer - search on the XDA app is rather poor (being as polite as possible ).

Thanks. I notice the last couple of posts there also point to another patch people are using with Oxygen. Will give it a go.

Edit: Yup, working now :)

Another difference is the ROM size: GV and CM7 are a bit larger than Redux and Oxygen. This is more relevant for those who are S-OFF and would like to use as small ROM as possible for /system, producing larger internal storage for apps.

One curiosity I noticed: the Miui camera I add has fewer features on Oxygen than the same apk gives on CM7 - for example, the "wide" picture mode is not available.

I think this is confirming that the camera app is not self-contained more than anything else.

You're right.

There are a lot of libs in a Rom to support camera features. It's not quite as much as audiofinger which controls all audio and how it works (pause when phone call etc) or surfaceflinger for display, but looking at the code, its high up there. The camera apk looks to be pretty much an interface (im sure there's a bit more to it than that), using whatever libs are in place.

Oxygen run their camera differently to all other Roms. Did the original apk have wide?

Yes, noticed that. On the hunt for speed now after trying latest Insertcoin nightly build (very laggy for me, and guess with GB and/or sense 2.1/3 bits a lot more of system had to be moved to sd-ext). S-Off and running old CM7 hboot for more internal storage - will change to Oxygen hboot if ROM i decide i like better will fit.

Presume GV and CM7 larger sizes has something to do with more customisation/bundled apps than Redux or Oxygen (except Google add-ons)?

Yup. Although redux and oxygen have their.own settings which can do most of the stuff anyway. Much of the cm code is universal so that probably wastes space

I was trying to remember that! I got into the habit of using this camera back when I was on GV, so am not sure I ever saw the base camera on CM7.0.3, and am sure I didn't with 7.1RC1.

Was thinking of returning to CM soon, in which case I'll have a look. Though not 100% sure why I'm thinking of returning - Oxygen is working just fine, I've even got my market black again, and the things it lacks are rather small matters. Maybe there are just too many people here using it? ;)

But anyway I'm now feeling I've used Oxygen enough to know what it's like & recommend it from experience rather than hearsay.

So the default camera app does have a wide mode in CM7.1RC1, and in the Miui camera used on same ROM. Default also has a few more picture quality settings, but no touch to focus.

However, I'm reading that the latest CM nightlies do have touch to focus, so I guess the release 7.1 will have too (and prob GV before then...)
