I am trying to install an Apk on my phone but it says that I cannot because the android market is set so that it cannot download any non-market items onto it

You need to go into the settings and allow for installation of unknown source/non-market applications. Should be something like Settings - Manage applications - and there should be a submenu for "unknown sources". Hope this helps :)

im new in my captivate i897... i would like to ask u, but i dont see the sub menu for unknown resources.. once i open manage application, it shos th third party/running/all/ on sd card. pls help.
 
If that doesnt work, some phones will allow to unlock "EMLIST" by adding a shortcut using a home screen launcher . At one time, doing this allowed you to reach the "unknown source" check box under "applications"
