APN data disable tool

On the android, there's an option 'turn off data while roaming'. Is this reliable enough when traveling or should I try a 3rd party utility that turns off the APN? Can anybody suggest 2-3 apps?

i would put an airplane mode widget on my homescreen and be done with it. wifi still works.

Try Juice Defender...it will save your battery enabling your APN only x minutes per some said interval. I use it when at work when I don't need constant updates.
