Root [APP] Data Backup & CWM installer for the LG Motion 4G MS770 (l0)

PlayfulGod

Extreme Android User
This app is to help with the Factory Reset issue when booting to true Clockworkmod Recovery. You can backup data before booting to CWM and restore it once rebooted from this app. This app will copy itself to system/app so it will remain installed after a factory reset, so it will require removing manually (if so desired) via adb shell, terminal emulator, or a root file explorer.

This app requires:
  • Root
  • A sdcard
  • a network connection, WiFi/4G

App for stock ROM

App for CM10

Stock Edition

CM Edition

Sorry for 2 different app, path to external_sd differs between stock & cm10 and to properly code it to download with the android class was more involved than I cared to invest time into for a free app. ;)

So, question. I pressed the button to flash cwm, gave root permission and then saw the message that it was downloading and flashing. How long does it take? How do I know if it successfully flashed? (Ok, two questions).

if not mistaken there should be a progress spinner that runs until its finished. ;)

Ok. It never happened. I never got a progress spinner, bar, or any other indicator.

it has one, lol, So dunno unless you happened to have a super fast connection and it dl'd the img and flash it quick enough that you didnt even notice it.

Downloading it should be the longest part, img is just like 8Mb, and flashing it only takes a few seconds. I just ran it on my motion and the whole process only took a few seconds. But I seen the spinner tho. lol

Ok. So I tried it. I made a back up, which took a long time, and then tapped reboot to recovery. I got the message saying it was going to install to system and then it proceeded to do a factory reset. After reboot I tapped the restore and got most of my apps back; the curious thing is that it didn't restore my Amazon app store or apps installed by Amazon. Any way, it also didn't reboot like it said it would (or that I thought it said it would), and my settings weren't restored. I had to manually redo my holo launcher and desktop settings.

what size is you sdcard and how much space was/is free on it. If you ran out of space during the backup it could have issues like that. And on the stock ROM, data is huge out of the box, and then gets more bloat installed on the first boot. I'm not sure how much space any of the debloated/custom stock based roms are, just my few test on stock data was HUGE. lol

I have a 32 gig sd card, so I don't think I ran out of room. I have 20gig avail right now on my sd card.

nope that shouldnt been the cause then. lol

This isnt the idea way to backup data, just a temp fix hopefully for the data being wiped when booting to recovery. I'd really like to find a fix for that than have to use this app. Just not figured it out myself yet and none of the popular or highend devices seem plagued with it.

So, was I supposed to actually boot into cwm? As noted earlier, I had pressed the button to flash it. I

No, not unless you planned to do something in it like flash a ROM, etc.

Idea of the app is to get a current backup of data before booting to recovery. I mean a backup can be done with the 2nd-init recovery too, but why not just flash wtfe while in it. This app is mainly for the hardcore types that rather have a true recovery and not have to use 2nd-init. ;)

That and having CWM actually installed could be handy in case of a booboo. ;)

Ok. So it doesn't flash cwm with the button? I thought it did. If so, how do we boot into it?

its does, it downloads and installs with the same button and has a reboot button in the app. Other than that would have to use the button combo or adb reboot recovery to boot to recovery.. or use my rebooter app or others. I still have the 2nd-init recovery reboot option patched in the Cm10 builds until the data wipe issues are fixed.

If I use the "Flash CWM" button, can it replace the currently running recovery, namely, 2nd Init... As 2nd init isn't a "true" recovery, I could see that happening...

Oh, and does "stock" mean strictly stock, or would Collab 3.01 ROM count as close enough to stock that I could expect this to work as on pure stock?

Just figured I'd get all my questions out there @ once. :D Thanks!

the flash cwm button will flash cwm, aka replace stock recovery with cwm, it wont touch the 2nd-init recovery installed.

flash stock means it flashes stock recovery back, nothing to do with ROMs. ;)

Well yeah but the two versions refer to ROMs, not recovery flavors... Stock/CM10... What I had understood was that users running CM10-ish ROM, (which means their installed recovery is CWM, not stock) would run the LG Motion Backup CM10 Edition... users running Stock based ROMs (ms77010f, Collab, etc... which means their recovery is the default/stock LG "recovery", regardless of 2nd Init) would use the Stock Edition...

is that correct?
