Root App extraction without root

I am trying to extract some apps to move them to my new phone. I haven't been able to root the phones to gain easy access to the system folder as I'm running 2.3.4 and all methods to root Gingerbread without loosing all data haven't worked. Would anyone know of a way to extract downloaded apps from a non rooted phone? The apps I want to transfer to the new phone are now not available in the market so that route is out.

Just doing the first steps in this thread will allow you root access without losing any data:

Just don't do the downgrade process, that's where you lose data.

So basically you just have to run the version of unrevoked that is linked in the thread :)

Oh I've tried that several times. Every time I do it Unrevoked eventually times out with the dreaded "Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?" message. I found a thread on that and tried any suggestions that didn't involve doing a reset as the goal here is to grab some apk's to transfer to my new phone. There was another thread that had you unlock the bootloader and install CWM recovery from flash but thanks to Murphy and his many laws I've run into a snag doing HTC's procedure (and I'm waiting for a reply from HTC's tech support folks). That's why I appealed to the learned folks here to see if there was another way to get the apk's without root. I know I need access to the /system/data folder to get to the apk's and that usually involves getting root. But since I'm deadlocked right now I tossed the ball at the forum. Thanks for the reply though. I'd certainly do what you suggested if I hadn't already.
