LightFlow can adjust notifications for most any notification in a variety of ways:
Sound:
Each person or notification can have a unique alert sound. The sounds can repeat at different predetermined intervals (i.e. a low importance alert can alert you only once when the notification happens, but a more important notification can repeat every 30 seconds, or minute or 15-minutes, etc.)
Vibration:
Same as sound. And like sound you can even choose for it not to happen or only as a repeat reminder, etc.
Notification light (different colors is hardware dependent):
You can set the light to flash or not flash at different flash rates and for different durations. i.e. An important alert can flash red rapidly until you manually tun it off, but medium importance can flash blue at a moderate rate for one hour.
Start with the free version. It has all the functionality of the full version, just works with fewer applications:
If you go into the settings for each of your different apps, like your SMS app, you should be able to set different sounds for different types of notifications (calls, emails, SMS, alarms, etc.) That's what I've done on my Gingerbread-based LG Optimus S.
The default was to have the same notification sound for both email and SMS but I changed them so they're different now.
