[APP] GrooVe IP - Google Voice VoIP

FYI. Pbxes started working again, and after changing my GV password there, all is well. Groove IP is working in and out. Now to play a bit.

Is there any reason to think that Google may try to circumvent your program?

Thanks again for a nifty proggy. :)

Haven't figured out yet how Google decides to route calls. Glad it's working for you now :)

just purchased the app-- it won't register with google voice, the GV icon stays red. I've checked username and password multiple times.. I'm using an LG Thrive

Are you using 3G or WiFi? If you are using 3G, make sure the Allow 3G/4G calling checkbox is checked in the GrooVe IP settings. If you are using WiFi, is it a public WiFi or your house WiFi? Certain ports may be blocked which would cause registration to fail. The username/password should be the same combination you use to sign in at google.com/voice.

Hi,

thanks for the response. I am using WiFi at home. I can access the internet with my handset no problem at all, and I could also access gmail and other google things through my handset so I know my username and login works.

Using a laptop, I could make calls through Gmail voice, so potentially it isn't a port problem-- though I'm not sure if a computer would use the same port to access the google voice service as a handset would.

any other thoughts on what might be preventing the registration? oh the fun debugging process ;) (I have to deal with custom softwares at work too so I know what that's like... heh. you're doing amazingly well though with trouble shooting-- from what I've seen on this thread-- way to go!)

Would you mind signing up for a new google voice account/number? Just so we can eliminate the account being a problem?

still loving this app. One small bug (or pehaps feature issue) is that I often become trapped in the groove dialer screen during a call with no way to get back to the "call in progress" screen. An example: during a call if i hit the back button, groove returns me to the dialer screen...but without the "hang up" button or the "dialpad" button. To hang up the call i have to go all the way back to the app shortcut on my home screen and then hang up.

A few times, i have not successfully hung up the call but thought I had due to this bug. And with no seperate "call in progress" indicator, it is tough to tell if there is an active call. Perhaps something like the stock dialer where a phone icon appears during a call would help... or even a third color for the existing GV icon to indicate an active call.

Sure. Thanks for the feedback. Right now you can use the default notification icon to get back into the call screen. If you open the app via that, and you are in a call, it will open the call screen.

What we can do is maybe change the icon to indicate you're in a call. Would that work?

Yes, that would be a helpful feature. I do think that it should be impossible to end up on the initial dialer screen during a call (the one without the hang up button). Right now, hitting back once during a call takes you there.

thanks!

I'll take a look at what the default dialer does with the back button. Thought it also went back to the dial pad.

yep, tried it with a different account, same deal-- won't register and the GV icon stays red... The other account works fine while using a laptop too.

Hm..Do you have a task killer or any similar app? Wonder if our background service is getting killed. Can you try rebooting the phone? And also check in the running services if the GrooVe IP service is running or not.

yep the GrooVe IP service is definitely running, in fact, everytime I intentionally kill it with the App Manager it restarts itself in a few seconds. Also have rebooted the phone many times, didn't make a difference though...

Have you tried it on any other network? Like a different wifi or on 3G?

Lovin it so far, other than on 3G. No biggie there, as I wasn't expecting much.

One issue noted so far; When I leave my home (on wifi) the phone transitions to cellular, but not back to wifi when I come back home. Icon stay red. I have to wake/unlock phone to re-connect to wifi.

Sipdroid handled the transition well.

That said, this is however, much better than the convoluted pbxes route.

Oh and snrb, I was mistaken about battery life. It seems quite good.

:)

yes, I have tried it on two completely seperate wifi networks at two different locations about 7 miles apart...

Can you shoot me an email. I have a logging build that will tell me what's going on with the signalling. Might indicate why it's not logging in. Just include your order number and where you bought the app from.

- Fix a potential freeze when exiting or connectivity changed
- Fix the call timer reseting when you hit home and then go back to the in-call screen
- Default area code config should work for numbers dialed with native dialer also
- Mute music when in a GrooVe IP call (2.2 and above)
- Mute system notifications when in a GrooVe IP call

I just purchased GrooVe IP and it works great when I'm connected via Wifi (practically zero delay at all). When I switch to EDGE, the status indicator turns red and says "Not Registered" but does not go back to green (I waited for 20 minutes but no go). I've read through this entire thread and have ensured the 3g/4g box is checked, that I'm forwarding to Gtalk in Google Voice, etc. I have yet to try it using 3g (I need to drive to another part of town to do that.. I'll report back on that tomorrow).

Should it register properly using an EDGE connection?

I'm on the AT&T network using a Dell Streak.

Thanks!
Dan

The sign in may be timing out on Edge. The only thing you should have to change if it works on WiFi is to check the allow 3G/4G calling checkbox. I would expect it will sign in and work better over 3G.

It finally did connect on EDGE, but the delay was 3 seconds or so.. Hopefully 3g will be more comparible to Wifi.. Wifi sound quality is excellent!

Just one feature suggestion: to allow incoming calls to route through a bluetooth headset if one is connected.

On a side note, I've been using sipdroid through sipgate for some time now and have been waiting for an app like this to come along.. I figured the reason there aren't hundreds of apps like this out there was that google was making it impossible to connect directly.. Do you forsee Google blocking third party apps from connecting directly to their service any time in the future?

Thanks,
Dan

Thanks for the suggestion. We do have a few bluetooth enhancements planned. We connect to Google just like Google Chat does. Unless they decide to stop supporting calls through Google Chat, the app should continue to work.

I seem to be experiencing the same registration issues on 3g as I experienced last night on EDGE. It took 15-20 minutes this morning before it registered and the status indicator turned green. I can tell it is trying to log in because I see my data lights illuminating.

Any suggestions? My 3g connection is getting about 1.2Mbps with a strong signal.

EDIT: While waiting for it to connect I tried logging into the gmail web interface on my phone and it immediately registered once I logged in.. Now I can close Groove IP and re-open and it logs in immmediately every time..

Thanks!
Dan

This application saved my life, so thank you. Now, l would like to let you know that it work very well on my Samsung galaxy Tablet GT-p1000. however, not so good on the LG optimums V on virgin mobile. the V is rooted and running a custom ROM. the issue that it wont stay connected while on 3G, and wont connect automatically as it should. we have the 3G/4G checked, and we also have the auto start checked. what do you think the problem might be?

Are you using the same account on both devices? Also, have you tried restarting the phone to see if that helps?

Not sure I understand what you mean by it doesn't connect automatically? What do you have to do to make it connect?
