[App help] New Maps app?

I tend to side with the people who think that removing Latitude is part of their strategy to get everyone on Google+ (in order that they can join the dots better when serving you ads). In which case the loss of that service to people who don't use G+ isn't careless at all.

To me the most disappointing feature loss, unless I missed it, is in the old Navigator I could swipe between search, contacts and historic places.
In the new Maps I cant get to contacts, I have to exit then go to contacts then select address, then maps, etc.
The other loss is the way the search results come up. I used to search for Chinese takeaway and it would list them with addresses and name. Now it just displays them on a map of push pins. You have to select each one to see the name etc.

I do like the ability to see traffic on new Maps and I believe that it can reroute automatically dependant on traffic but I couldn't find any settings for this.

I'll be giving the new Maps app a good workout next week as our family takes a trip to Disneyworld. If it doesn't do the job, we can always switch to Apple's Maps on my wife's iPhone 5.... oh wait. LOL. Actually, it's not too bad... the new Android maps app is a lot like the one they did for iOS, actually. And I really like the interface and leanness of the app. I just hope they add functionality quickly.

I plan on giving the new Explore function a good try when we go looking for food outside of the parks near Disneyworld.

I understand Google wants to refocus and cut out products to become leaner. However, I don't really like their execution... they don't think twice about adding, removing, or modifying much-loved services and applications. And they do it so flippantly that it seems like a disservice to their loyal customers.

I understand this as well, but for some products, their changes don't make much sense - specifically, when they replaced Talk with Hangouts - I hated the changes, and reverted back to Talk. I hope they listen to their users and add the lost functionality back in.

Yeah progress should mean adding functionality, not removing it. Im starting to get what people mean by "dumbing down"

At the same time you need to remove features that are redundant or not being used. Otherwise we would all be complaining about how bloated Maps is.

Removing Latitude may be an example of this.

Just for the record, I installed a 4.2.2 rom today and the address links in the People/Contacts app are still not opening in the new Maps. Hopefully this is something that can be fixed on Google's side with an update to the app. I don't see why not since the older maps works just fine with contact addresses.

I uninstalled the new Maps update to get my trusted blue triangle navigation icon back. Is there a way to have maps stop sending me a request to update every day? I usually look at the updates and say "update all". Now I have to do each one individually so as not to install the new maps update again. Thanks, Art

Locate your contact in your contacts app but don't open the contact, just touch the photo. You'll get a pop-up with options, touch maps & it'll display your contact's address on the map. At the top of the map screen the address will be pre-loaded in the search bar. Touch the navigation icon in the search bar.

Doesn't work on my phone. When you tap on a contacts photo it dials their phone.

That's a shame because I will probably loose that function when my One X + gets the sense 5 upgrade whenever that might be. It only works from within the contacts list anyway. You can of course just type the contact name in the maps search bar.

Actually I didn't read carefully enough. The "don't open the contact" bit was key, but I overlooked that because it's not my natural workflow (I'll always open the contact, which gives me all of the info and options laid out clearly).

Can't confirm that touching the photo from the list works with the new maps (got some saved offline which I don't want to lose testing) but it does with the old, and I wasn't following instructions properly when I said it didn't.

Sorry for the noise.

BTW just read that the One X Sense 5 upgrade is starting to roll now :)

Hello. I've not had my hTC for long, but already I really like it. Most of my friends use the iPhone (shame on them, i.m.h.o), but each to their own is my view...

I drive for a living and found the Latitude app very useful, but the update {that is the integration into the maps app} has removed some of the functionality that made Latitude useful. I've read some comments that suggest that un-installing the update will put things back as they were, but I can't see a way of doing this on my device (a hTC Desire C)?

Short of doing a factory reset and then disabling the auto update function can I get Latitude back again?

If this has been covered elsewhere, sorry for the post...

Settings, Apps, Maps should've the option "Uninstall updates" :)

After uninstalling you'd have Maps 6.xx

Fantastic! Thanks for your help, Harry -- that worked fab! And also for your advice, Hadron :)

One of the things that I find very useful is the integration of Google maps (what I called the "on-line" version, although I understand that that's not technically correct as they are both "on-line") and the mobile app.

I've quite a few pin points which I regularly edit using my home PC and it's good to have that sync with the mobile app. Maybe this is an option with the updated version, but I couldn't see it. Plus the new UI was quite obviously designed for a bigger screen than my humble little hTC Desire C...

I also use GPS Waypoints, together with Maps/Latitude and work these apps via Car Dashboard. All in all, it's a very good system.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and thanks for the very quick response. My best regards to you.

:D

You're welcome :)

It's the layer "My Maps" on Maps 6 ... and no, you'd not find it on the updated version of Maps 7 :(
