This can be theoretically avoided by placing empty file names ".nomedia" in the folder with pictures, but this was not working on my phone : HOW TO : Exclude attachment images from Gallery - NitroDesk TouchDown | Google Groups I rather use "QuickPic" app to view pictures, it's better than Gallery and you can select folders to hide in it's settings.

Podivin Android Expert Apr 23, 2011 #3 Another vote for QuickPic here. I appreciate the fact that you can include/exclude folders so that you only see what you want to see.
