app restore without root

Like many, waiting for a reliable/solid root for the N3 (vzw specifically). In the meantime, wondering if the following would work. I don't have two android devices to test it.

If while connected to a PC, if you copy the app file from the android data directory, is it possible to paste that into the android data directory on another android device. Or is the write to that directory protected by root?

Is there a backdoor method to restore a TB backed up app from the rooted source to the new none rooted device.

Just trying to figure out how to restore some backed up data from my rooted bionic, onto the N3 when it comes this week.

Thanks in advance for the shared knowledge

Data or app? They're different.

You can use a file manager like ES File Explorer to create an apk file of an app, move the apk file to the SD card of another phone, then install it using an apk installer (plenty of free ones in Play).

Data depends on the app.

I love this! Never actually heard of Helium but here's my big chance to give it a go :)

EDIT: Oh, it's Carbon renamed. Yes I'd heard of it and recommend it...

EDIT 2: I went ahead and bought the Premium version with the $5 credit I won on a KitKat bar ( first one I ever opened! :D ) anyway it advertises that it can sync backups to the cloud and sync Android device to Android device. As soon as my Note 3 comes in, I'm going to find out whether I wasted the prize.

primarily app I think. I have some apps that have separate data files (at least one or two that I had need to look for them). I know those are located in other directories. For that type of app, I plan to install via the Play Store, then cross my fingers and hope to install the data files on the new device.

but some apps, I guess they are apk files (dont know about this kinda stuff) are a combo of app+data. I do have ES Explorer on my Bionic. so I should look for an option to create and apk file. will do that ... and transfer to the SD card. then .. guess i just wait until the N3 arrives this week.

Would prefer to use TB pro (since I bought that one) but since ROOT is still not quite there yet, Maybe I'll plunk down money on helium. When I bought TB pro, it was because some of the apps I used could not be backed up without root, wonder if this is the same, or things have changed in the past two years. THANKS for the suggestion on Helium though...
