[App] Screen Off App/Widget

As with many day to day activities, there are only so many times something can be done before it wears out or breaks.

For instance, the button on your shirt or pants has been tested so that the mfg., nows how many times it can be buttoned or unbuttoned before it fails. (probably a bad comparision example, but nonetheless should hit home my point)

The same holds true for the power button on the phone.

If I have an app that I can simply press an icon/widget to turn off the screen, then I reduce my power button presses by 50%.

I have an app installed called No Lock, that actually allows your volume up and down keys to turn the screen back on, so now I can reduce that 50% Power button use to 25% if I alternate evenly between the two.

Make sense?

i had a blackberry curve for 2 years and the sleep button on the top never once failed or wore out.

You are correct: this app currently only turns the screen off. I am curious about your idea, though: how would you envision this app turning your phone back on? Would you please elaborate? Thanks!

how about motion sensing? phone is moved or the screen is touched and the phone wakes up?

but say the phone is tapped and it turns on and no1 uses it well this is where idle time will come into play and say if the phone isnt used in 30 secs ph goes back to sleep!

note to self never reply in a thread when your drunk.

If not an app that directly shuts the phone off, maybe a widget, or something, that brings you to the screen when you hold the power button? That wouldn't be directly making the phone sleep, just doing the function of long pressing the power button.

Anything out there like that?

I have been searching for an app to this since I got my Evo in July. That is what I missed about my Windows Mobile (Touch Pro2)- the endless apps- reg tweaks. I had one on my homescreen- just tap and turned off instantly. Since switching to Android- because of the Evo- I have tried to find similar apps I had on my TP2. Still got 3 to go. I have seen screenoff and power off on the marketplace for .99- but with such a simple app- not spending a buck for it.

People wonder why do I need an app when you get just reach to the top of the phone to power off... answer- convenience. I don't want to wait 15 seconds to power off by itself. I just want to push and off it goes with the press of my thumb on one hand.

I hear you brother. Been looking for the same thing. I want it because I like to prrserve the buttons and the power button for the EVO is in and doesnt look all that sturdy. All power buttons on devices make me feel strange, they go and you're screwed, if you think about it.

At least something that can bring my EVO to the power-down screen.

Sorry for gravedigging, but is there an app that would turn off the screen while not stopping program activity, mainly audio and GPS?

I'm looking for this to be able to use Copilot GPS program without screen for motorcycle audio navigation - currently it can't be done.

I've tried the free version of Screen Off but Copilot stops audio whenever it is minimized. I even installed Bar Control to put Screen Off into the status bar so I wouldn't have to minimize Copilot to run Screen Off, but Copilot turns off audio when the screen turns off

How do you people hold your phone/how small are your hands that you can't reach the button with 1 hand?

Speaking of which, does anybody know of an app that will charge my phone without my actually plugging it in? Because that's just too much work for me.

lmao!

While there is of course not an app for charging your phone without plugging it it, you can most certainly charge cell phones these days without plugging them in. Not sure if there is support for the EVO models yet, but I know Blackberry models already support mat charging.

And by the way, is it really your place to judge or make fun of others for wanting something more convienant or something that increases the life of the power button?

To each his own right?

I'm glad I found this post. While the discussions above pertained to phones, with the prevalence of Android tablets these days, this post again pertinent. With tables, hardware buttons or soft-buttons on the face of the device are certainly much more accessible than ones flush with the edge.

I use a Nook Color running N2A Android. The power button is not conveniently placed for frequent use. Also, the power off function is very sensitive to other factors, such as movement and touches to the screen. I can press the power off button and if there is the slightest movement before the cycle is complete then it is cancelled and the screen comes back on again. The same is true for touches to the screen. I power off and if I close the cover too quickly then the screen comes back on again, but this time with the cover closed. If I don't notice then the battery runs down.

I downloaded and installed the Screen Off application. What a handy application. One quick tap to the icon on the screen and power is off! I can shake it, touch the screen, store it, and it stays off reliably. To power up again, I only need press any of the hardware buttons, including the N button on the face, and power is restored immediately.

Regards,
Andrew
