Help App That Is Like Texting, But Uses Data

Is there an app/widget which functions like a SMS text but uses data?

I don't text much, mostly my own family. I am looking for an app which we can use like text but doesn't cost $0.20 each time. Is there an IM program which rings or alerts on the phone like an incoming text?
 
email -> text, that's pretty cool! But if I text my wife she will still have to pay to receive the text.

I'm reading about Google Voice SMS texting. Has anybody tried this? It sounds like it completely bypasses Verizon - free texting.
