App Updates - Your Opinion?

Mr. Lucky

Android Expert
Over the last few months, I have become very reluctant to update anything. If you look at the market (Play) reviews, it seems that there are more and more people complaining that recent updates cause the app to stop working, or introduce new problems

What I do as a root user, back up the app with titanium backup before update incase the update breaks something. That way I'm not stuck with a crummy update.

Stock non-rooted users can do the same with my backup pro.

I never let anything auto update, but can't say I've noticed anything different lately.

Of course there may be selection bias in reviews: people are unlikely to update their reviews if an update causes no problems, but will if it causes (or fixes) one.

I never have auto update selected for any app. I do though manually update everything as soon as an update is available.

The only real reason for this is I like to see what has been changed. Not so I can make any call whether to update or not. I'm just curious.

I've very very rarely had a problem with a new update (bugs aside) - G+ was crap for a little while is the only one I can think of. Most bugs are also rectified pretty quickly.

I do the same - I remember MS taking out cameras and scanners and a few other things. Once bitten, twice shy.

I did have one incident (fixed) with the upgrade to ICS from GB on the Acer Tablet.
The developer did finally figure out the cause and fixed it.

I also will skip language only updates. Keyboards do this. I don't need Mandarin Chinese or Tagalog.

Latest example: Yesterday, an update was released for one of the most popular games on Android… Angry Birds Seasons. Everyone who updated and had previous games scores found that the update broke the app - specifically, it would close after the splash screen. First-time game downloads of the new version or updates with no completed levels had no problem. The solution for everyone else? Clear data (Settings > Applications > Manage applications), which of course made your saved configuration and all previously completed levels vanish. I'd say that's a pretty serious problem! Even reverting to the previous version couldn't revive the app. It seems that the update permanently corrupts the data.

I've never really had problems with updates.

However, I do have Auto Updates turned off since multiple updates freeze-up my phone. When there are multiple apps needing updates, I update on app at a time.

Question, am I alone in problems with multiple apps updating, or are there others of you who have their phone freeze-up when their phone tries to download multiple updates?
