I didn't get my first Android until the Droid X, so I may not have seen some of these earlier stage things. But I remember there being alternatives on day 1 if I didn't like a Google app.

Although, I think Apple's biggest headache to come isn't going to be maps, it'll be with the 4" screen and if it is or isn't easy to upgrade to the new resolution.

It's even possible for an Amazon to take Android, replace Play with Amazon appstore, replace Google Maps with Nokia's and replace Google Search with Microsoft Bing! What a horrible travesty but at the same time what a beautiful expression of technological freedom!

As long as you have the skills, you can do almost anything you want with it and nobody can put a limit on it.

He's probably rolling around in his grave right now. Either way, I don't think it really matters. People are going to buy the product regardless based on the name alone. The majority of people are your average consumer who don't do any research prior to buying any kind of technological device. They hear Apple, and throw their money.

Tom Tom created the maps for Apple I believe, so I'm not sure why it's so crappy

I made Firefox the default browser on my macbook (yes, I use one for work). I don't know whether I can make an alternate app the default browser on WP8 btw.

But I do find it hard to believe that SJ would have let something as half-baked as this go live in a high profile launch.

That's the thing though, even the normal non 3d maps is crappy. The level of detail compared to Google maps is horrid. Especially college campuses, I can't believe they didn't name the buildings.

I can't believe apple actually thought this would compete with Google.

Ah I see. I understand Tom Tom is all about navigation and driving from A to B. I've used Tom Tom sat-nav in the UK and it's been very good, well it always got me there, and not driving off bridges. :D

So when Apple decided to put 3D on it and try and make it look pretty, they completely screwed it up. Tim Cook probably said to the devs, "That's OK, this will do." :rolleyes:
 
Yes, apple screwed up the implementation of tom toms maps. It's the exact same tom tom map that tom tom uses in its devices
 
The level of detail in Tom Tom sucks apparently. Even in map view its missing road names, one way road indicators and campus building names. I don't see why anyone would want that. Apple should have known better
 
I would love to read the emails flying back and forward between various Apple departments.
It couldn't happen to a nicer multi billion dollar conglomerate.

One would think that if it was a 'WIP' that one would not make it the sole option. I think it would have been wiser to release it as an app in the App Store so users could contribute to the bugs. And also wait 6 months to clean it up.

I don't recall them saying this before all of the problems with iMap were reported. When the iPhone 4S came out with Siri, they did say it was a beta. I do not recall them saying that when iOS 6 was announce with the new Mapping app.

What if Apple and Tom Tom both screwed up? Everyone would blame each other and nobody would know how to fix this crappy mess of a situation.
 
I suppose Apple could tuck their tails between their legs and go back to Google Maps? The laughter would die down eventually.

Well, Apple can't have everything. Besides, it's only natural that Google would want to have something exclusive for its own platform. Apple would do the same thing too.
