Making it the only option is what blows my mind. It makes no sense at all. As far as releasing it as an app, Google made that same mistake in the beginning. I'm amazed that Apple didn't learn from it.
I didn't get my first Android until the Droid X, so I may not have seen some of these earlier stage things. But I remember there being alternatives on day 1 if I didn't like a Google app.
.
As others have said, this would never have happened with Jobs still in control.
AFAICT Apple Maps is using Open Street View....talk about being cheap. Surely the mighty and rich Apple could have easily acquired say TomTom or Navteq? That's what they usually do, when they need something.
Steve is no longer at the helm of Apple and the corporate bean counters are in control? ..and now there's rumours of easily scuffed black iPhone 5s. Tim Cook is not going to be another John Sculley(Pepsico > Apple) is he?
Tom Tom created the maps for Apple I believe, so I'm not sure why it's so crappy
I made Firefox the default browser on my macbook (yes, I use one for work). I don't know whether I can make an alternate app the default browser on WP8 btw.The least Apple could do is allow 3rd party apps to become the default. I can make Safari the default web browser on my PC and that's run by 'evil' Microsoft.
Apple probably screwed the data up when they decided to make it 3D. They have to know what they are doing and if they are using someone else's data, they may not know how to fix the problems.

May be bad form to quote myself, but judging by some of these pictures, the "thermonuclear war" had some collateral damage lol.Part of Apples "thermonuclear war" on Google.![]()
But Apple did say it's a "Work In Progress"!!!
One would think that if it was a 'WIP' that one would not make it the sole option. I think it would have been wiser to release it as an app in the App Store so users could contribute to the bugs. And also wait 6 months to clean it up.
So maybe this is the way apple actually sees the world

Soon it'll be the only way you see the world too![]()
I would love to read the emails flying back and forward between various Apple departments.
It couldn't happen to a nicer multi billion dollar conglomerate.
I suppose Apple could tuck their tails between their legs and go back to Google Maps? The laughter would die down eventually.
The problem is that Google only offers turn by turn nav for Android and Apple wants that, too.
