applications that won't stay closed

Tried doing a search to no avail as I thought I had saw something on this a week or so ago. I am new here and keep having issues with my Eris. I stopped using a task killer as different ones I have tried tend to eat my battery. At any rate things were fine until today when I noticed that when I click on manage apps and view running apps things like Ebay and MP3 music store are running after reboot. I have forced closed them and when I go back into view the running apps they are still showing up. Why aren't they closing? They used to before today. Please help! I am getting so frustrated with this phone. Things were actually fine and everytime I try something new to get more battery life I end up with a worse problem than I had before.
