Apps "cannot communicate with server" for 24hrs

Hi,
A couple of days ago my phone, whilst able to send/receive emails and use the browser app OK, couldn't access the other apps (Facebook etc) "cannot communicate with server" for approx 24hrs.
I was told by an O2 Guru that it had to undergo a software reload. I dithered about it for a day, at the end of which it just started working again by itself.
The phone is 3 weeks old. Has anyone else experienced this or have an idea of what happened as it's a 24 month contract so not a great start!

I would suggest, if email and browser worked but social networking didn't, that the issue was with O2's network.

Thanks for your reply, here's what the O2 Guru told me -

"Your issue is a glitch in the software. By doing a hard reset, you're forcing the handset to reload the software which is what's needed to repair the lost server problem"

Glad I dithered for 24 hours as whatever the problem was just rectified itself as if by magic!
