Root Apps, Items That Can Be Safely Removed

Very nice find, hammydrizzle. Just installed, and as you said, problem solved. :)

You can even map the stock dialer key to invoke Go Dialer Ex. This is a Godsend if you've messed up and removed some apps such as the Yahoo ones that are laced into the stock contacts app and are causing force closes, etc.

I did that, too! I think the Go Dialer looks nicer. :)

I found that moving media provider and media sync no longer allowed me to view my camera roll and my library in my gallery. So I put these back in the system/app directory.

Before I moved anything, my friends recent facebook pictures were shown in the gallery when i first opened it. I am trying to figure out what I moved that changed this. Now it shows my pictures and when I click on add social network at the top I get the following error:

"The application gallter (process com.motorola.gallery) has stopped working unexpectedly. Please try again"

Any ideas which apk might be causing this?

You are correct but I only added Media Provider back in, rebooted and it now works... Thanks!

I'm new to android, but possibly insanely adventurous. I too deleted the yahoo stuff (before I learned you really should just freeze the apps) and my contacts no longer work. Feel kinda dopey. should I backup all my apps, and reset to factory? Any ideas? :(

EDIT- I just downloaded Go Contacts EX, it works great, could see my contacts, crisis averted!

I foolishly uninstalled these APKs too...I am using Go Contacts EX, but wondering if there is a way to restore/re-install the yahoo APKs. Will a factory reset work?

Maybe you could explain how to remap the contacts button?

Yes, a factory reset will fix it.

I've found that to not be true of some Android devices (Eris, Fascinate). It would be good to know if it does work for the D3, but I'm not going to test it on my phone at this point. ;)

Some system files don't get reinstalled on FDR, just the Market apps removed, settings restored, etc.

The only side affect I have noticed so far is that all of my ringtones are missing. They must be part of one of the apks. Other than that, everything I have tested seems to work fine.

You seem to have quite a few apps that do not show up for me, so seems some of the stuff your are freezing are user installed apps.

BTW, the stock apps do not take up much space, so the reward of app space is not worth risk. Just freeze them!

Apparently I got really lucky- the app I was using to delete stuff did in fact back it up, I just discovered. (System Tuner Pro) So all is good. :)

I dont know why I never even tried doing this on my rooted DX. I just moved a bunch of listed apps to a 'old' folder. Awaiting more rooted fun on my D3 :)

F@$%

I moved DLNA to a folder, and now it keeps FCing. How do I get it to stop trying to run?

edit-
Nevermind, rebooting the phone seems to have stopped it.

So this is how you stop it? I've frozen mine as well as its supporting file with TB and it still runs.

Yep. I removed DLNA completely (didn't freeze, I deleted it off the phone and backed it up on my PC)
I was getting a continuous FC, so I pulled my battery, rebooted.
Everything is fine now. w00t

I'm sure you all know that dlna is a media server.

I was wondering which services run to support that app, because I found that a reboot does indeed halt the force closes, leading me to believe the services may be removed right along with the deletion of the apk:

DLNA Media Server for Android

Bad news.

Something broke my camera app.
I only removed stuff from the original post, so I don't know what caused it.

edit-
Hmm. Maybe not... I rebooted and now it's fine.
But it was throwing all kinds of errors. Oh well.

edit again-
It seems that it was an app I installed. "CamCard" used for reading business cards.

I just rooted my Droid 3. I have both Titanium Backup and Root Explorer installed. I cannot find a way of freezing files in Titanium Backup. Do I need the pro version to do this?
When I try and move files using Root Explorer, I get the message:
"Blockbuster (or whatever I'm trying to move).apk cannot be moved because thefile system is read-only"
I'm not able to change the permissions for the same reason.
When starting Root Explorer I'm given the message that it was granted superuser access
How do I go about freezing or moving files?

Ok, nobody started this yet, but as in all phone rooting roms, people ask.

So, i've only removed the following so far, I'm freezing other things until I can do a nandbackup. Do note, that if you remove, freeze any apps, you should reboot your phone to avoid the apparent onslaught of FCs.

Safe to Remove:
Skype Mobile
NFL Mobile
Amazon Kindle

Definitely dont remove apps, before full custom recoveries are a go. Freezing is best option. By unfreezing, setting all your custom settings you changed prior during rooting is also recommended. Then reboot, get your phone back to "OEM" status... then flash your updates (if using SOAK/Leak files), or sit tight and wait for the OTA. I went ahead and set everything back to normal, and flashed the leak, works great, no problems.

im pretty sure i did tiainum back up before i did remove those things, when i restored everything unfreeze it didnt come back i dunno why, i just hope those things dnt affect me !
