Help Apps randomly disappear: uninstalled

Shurple

Android Enthusiast
The last few weeks I've had an issue that random apps randomly disappear. I mean completely uninstalled and I did not uninstall them! I've had to reinstall Words with Friends, Foursquare, ShopKick, and a few others. This started happening after the latest update.

Any ideas?

Are you moving the apps to the Media area in settings->applications->manage applications? If yes, try keeping them in internal memory and see if the same thing happens.

The phone doesn't have enough of memory to keep ALL apps on the main portion. If I move them over, i'll run out of space immediately. So moving them back is not an option. (the media section IS on the phone internal memory, not SD). I dont even use my SD card cept for contacts and music. This issue started with the update.

Note: Some apps are on the phone main section and still disappear. Such as Google + because I use it as a widget.

I have 1.3 GB available space for applications with none in Media area.

My understanding is that this issue of disappearing apps happens to people who move apps to the Media area. See this thread: http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid-3/413734-apps-vanishing-reappearing-my-apps.html

I've had one instance of an app not launching with an error saying that it was no longer installed with no apps in the Media area, but it launched fine just after.

You may want to try removing any large apps that do not fit and see if things are more stable that way.

I'm not sure if rooting fixes this; I'm not rooted.

By the way, it looks like you've reported a similar issue before, with a similar recommendation that you said worked: http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid-3/433907-out-memory-but-i-have-plenty.html#post3366387

It seems to me that moving apps to the memory area (which isn't the physical SD, but is just like it: it's the external 16 GB memory storage space on the phone, /sdext. not /data) is glitchy on this phone. I believe that the Bionic has the same issue.

Happened to me, solved after updating firmware.

reimer how do you update the firmware?

Seriously i can't fit the apps in the main portion of the phone. when the phone gets below 1G of memory it starts getting wonky. I still get the out of memory issue and i stopped updating the apps because it's silly to move them back and forth.

When i say i dont have room on the main portion i mean i have 3Gigs of apps in the media area. The phone comes with 2, or 11 if you count the media area.

I cant wait to go back to iphone. Droids suck seriously. The phone is partitioned with 11 gigs of space and 9 of them cant be used? How ******ed is that?

Thanks for the replies though..... i just know the files i have are WAY too large to move over. i have 1.3gigs left in the main portion and 3 in the media (that's a lot of apps and i use them all)

Could you move info from the phone SD to your external SD? I can't fathom how you've filled the internal SD completely.

no no what i'm being told is NOT to use the internal SD just use the main partition which i dont have enough room. using the phone internal SD is the same as using an external, and no you can't move anything but music and pics to the external SD.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread. I have intermittently experienced apps randomly disappearing and it seems like in the last two weeks, I'm noticing it more often. Of course I'm checking for it more often, it may have been happening all along.

I'm using Appbrain to sync my installed apps to their server and there is a history tab. It seems at random I'll notice an app reported as uninstalled. I have not uninstalled it nor have I moved it to the media area. It's just gone.

I am rooted and running the current stock firmware. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Have you checked in settings->applications->manage applications, Media Area tab, to see if any of the apps are in the media area anyway? Every once in a while I will check there and find that an app was installed there despite the fact that I never put apps in the media area.

Thanks for the pointer. It looks like they are mostly there. If they have been there all along, why would they show up suddenly as uninstalled? And if not, why would they have suddenly moved there?

I do not know why they end up there - there may be a bug, or there may be some algorithm that looks at the size of the install at the time that you run it and chooses to install to the media area.

for me, the few apps that dont update because they're in the media area, are now moved to my phone and never a problem since

So I noticed that not all of the missing items appear in the media area. One application that had been reported as uninstalled was not listed in the media area. Some days later, the application was reported as reinstalled and suddenly appeared in the media area. It's all really odd.
