Help Apps starting by themselves?

I LOVE this phone, but what is it with these applications starting themsleves in the background? I use the gmail app for my mail, and I am trying to minimize my data usage and everything so I've done the WiFi sleep policy setting, but after I went to bed, I woke up all of these running:
Youtube
Email
Voice
Gmail
Twitter
Gallery
Music Player
Video Player

Granted, I don't think gallery/music/video uses data, but still. It seems weird that they just decide to start up. Is there any way to BLOCK applications from starting up unless I do it myself? Or at least a way to make sure they don't use the data network unless I say? I have ATK, but they still start on their own randomly o.o

Kind of a weird bunch of applications to start up on their own. Have you tried turning off your Auto-Sync setting?

Home > Settings > Accounts and sync > Auto-sync. Remove the checkmark.

That should stop most of that from accessing data behind your back.

As for the gallery and media players... :confused:

I had Auto Sync off, but I had background data on. Should I just go ahead and turn background data off, too?

Although some apps only try to start on boot and can be terminated in one kill, many apps are written to auto-start even if killed. Just they way they're designed.

Basically if you don't like how a particular app is designed, your option is to not install it.
 
I was about to post the same thing. I check randomly through the day and odd apps are running like video/gallery etc and I don't even have any videos or pics yet. lol
 
Yup... was just ready to post this also... Followed the advice that other said in the thread and I still get apps popping up.

You have a Verizon phone. This is the Captivate forum, which is a AT&T phone.
 
Most of the APPs launches when U switch on ur phone. But apps like gallery, youtube wont come back if you kill them once. If u read CAPFAQ, there are some apps like market, keyboard etcwhich will relaunch itself so should be excluded from task killers.....rather use running apps from settings...

I found that if you hide the apps you don't use in LPP, they don't self-start. Nice benny of using the LPP launcher.

Additionally, there are some apps where I have no idea why they are connecting to internet (probably b/c they're add supported, but gallery isn't, so that always flustered me)...Anyway I have Juice Defender (only controls one app)/Ultimate Juice (controls unlimited apps) that lets me prevent whatever apps I want from accessing the internet altogether.

So I hide the apps I don't use (e.g., AT&T bloatware) with LPP, and then use UJ to prevent the questionable apps from accessing internet altogether. Like I have a lot of Quote apps which I'm not sure why they need internet as they don't have ads in them, and they still work when I add them to UJ's no-connect list. I just feel a little more protected.

I am almost positive this isn't the case. It only hides them from the app drawer. They can still launch. I keep them from launching on mine via the "freeze" feature in Titanium Backup.
 
Just rebooted to see what would happen. I had hidden all at&t bloatware except Hotspots. Only Daily Briefing (and Hotspots) self-started. So I do think hiding apps in LPP may keep them from self-starting. I do have Ultimate Juice preventing those at&t bloatware from connecting to the internet, so maybe the combo of the two apps keep the bloatware from self-starting.

EDIT: For kicks, I hid Hotspots and rebooted. Hotspots self started even tho I hid it. And this time AT&T Navigator also self started along with Daily Briefing. Not sure what this means about my original assertion :/
