Apps that come with spam?

Hello everybody, I have a question here. When I download certain apps on my phone I get spam in my notification bar it's like a star that pops up saying I won something. When I delete the app the star disappears. However I am scared the app may have ended up giving my phone some virus? :dong:
I'd like to know how I can keep my phone clean from hacks and viruses? Although, I have heard androids don't get viruses? Is this true? Can someone provide me with some information.

Download Add-ons detector from the Store. It will tell you which apps have the airpush ads.

Check the permissions before you download. Better yet, download from AppBrain and get further info.

Google has recently changed their policy and now developers can not have their apps spam notifications anymore. Rate the app 1 star and report it. Google will remove the app from Play so that others don't get that spam app.
