Apps you like and why.

GOOD GOD!

WHY WHY WHY did I install Robo Defense? They should have put a disclaimer on the program that states something like:

"After 5 minutes of playing this game, you will develop a heroin-type dependency on it and when not playing, will begin to shake uncontrollably"

That is one fun ass game!! :)

HAHAHA! No kidding. It even had me pull the covers over the bed so the light won't wake up my wife! Like I was 8 years old at a camp or something! What a great game.

I've gotten a great number of apps on my Hero, lets see where to begin...

Pandora- favorite streaming music player... EVER

Robo Defense FREE- we all know how utterly addicting this game is, I actually won for the first time a week or two ago

4Ever Fall FREE- another nice again, nice time killer for a sec

Backgrounds- I love putting different wallpapers on my device so this was a no brainer

iMusic- its the Limewire for my Hero, lol

Twidroid- Best twitter client IMO

Caller ID Faker- Such a geniously evil app... allows you to change your voice and mobile number. Called my sister the other night, and scared the **** out of her, lol!

Battery Widget- Nice little widget to give me a better idea of my power.

What i really miss from my blackberry is ubertwitter, particularly for it's local tweets abilities.

And email accounts consolidation of course

I agree, I loved using Ubertwitter on my Curve... I like Twidroid on my Hero but it isn't like the one on the blackberry.

its like the first augmented reality app for the android platform - you hold it up to the night sky and using the view through the camera, it overlays the constellations over the actual stars

really amazing
:)

It's possibilities like this that are really pushing me towards getting the Hero for Christmas (As opposed to the Instinct HD).

I'd stay away from the Instinct. I had the original and there hasn't been much changed since then, even though it's on it's 3rd incarnation. There are few apps for it and they are all ugly. You're MUCH better off going for the Hero/Moment/Pre than sticking with the Instinct.

Totally agree! Instinct (any version)= alot of problems that never will be resolved and near 0 apps (at least none of any use).

Buzzlock is another great app to have. It basically locks the phone into "vibrate-only" mode. Even if accidentally hit the volume up/down button, it remainds in vibrate only mode. Simple but effective!

I reckon I'll type this up...

These are all the Apps I have installed on my phone and short description of why I think they kick ass...

Note I'm also running Madoco Unofficial 1.2c ROM as well as the Optimization MOD.

My phone is also rooted...

4Ever Fall Free
Really fun game to quickly pull up. Not very involved. Never gets old for me.

aDyno
Really incredible app using the accelerometer and GPS to calculate a car's HP to the wheels. In my experimentation its about 10% or so accurate if ever piece of data is entered correctly and you drive the car perfectly as instructed.

AndFTP
Very simple FTP client software. No bells and whistles. Very fast DL speeds (I've hit 400KB/sec which is decent considering alot of servers throttle your DL speed.

ASTRO
By far the BEST file manager out there. Beautiful UI and icons, has a process manager built in, and I like being able to add shortcuts to a particular folder as a tile widget.

Atmosphere Trainer
Fun game to show off the accelerometer controls. You basically just fly a jet (First Person View) and pick up greed orbs then "deposit them." and do it again.

Bambuser
Not used very often, but again a powerful demonstration of the phone's capabilities. A video streaming service. Decent frame rates and resolution on sprint's 3G (I get about .5 to .75mbps upload) I have used it before here and there to show friends/family members something that they may want to see live, or an easier way to share videos than to record, then upload.

Bacrode Scanner
By itself, not very powerful. It simply decodes the barcode then links you to Google UPC or Google Product Search. Not as powerful as ShopSavvy or Compare Everywhere but when used with Google Mobile's site is handy. Also reads 2D barcodes which is handy!

Bonsai Blast
What can I say? If you like the game you already know what it is! Great graphics and fast controls.

Build-a-Lot
Very fun game where you buy land, build houses, fix them up, to grow. You buy materials to build/repair homes, can sell houses or land. Goals to meet for each level (Rent Income, Cash on hand, number of houses etc)

Doom
Again... you should alread know. Controls are "OK" once you get used to it. This is the free version in the market. Allows you to load custom WADs but until the Dev updates a way to use more controls (ability to switch weapons etc) then its just a "show off app"

Dope Wars
Sorry... I grew up playing this in high school on my TI-83/86/89 and its a must have.

eBuddy
Much better chat app than Palringo in my opinion. Still a major battery hog, so it doesn't stay logged in. Has AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, Facebook etc

Facebook
I just use it for the Widget. For "normal" facebook functions I just use their mobile (Facebook Touch) site. More features.

Flying Aces
Very similiar to the iPhone app... You land planes by drawing their paths. The number of planes increase and you have to navigate them all to a safe landing

FML Widget
Adds a small 2x4 widget to the home tiles with the latest FMLs. Click the widget to bring them all up quickly in text only format. (FML is F*** My Life FML: Your everyday life stories)

GDocs Notepad with Sync
A simple notepad that syncs with Google Docs. Text only, no RTF.

GemBuster
I bought the full version. Very fun game. Line up 3 of the same types of gem to clear them. Lots of "power up" gems etc.

GMote
Use your Hero sreen as a mouse. Also streams MP3s to your phone from your PC. Also control media player from your phone on your PC. Over wifi Only.

Google Sky Maps
VERY cool app using the compass and accelerometer to display stars and planets in augmented reality view. Doesn't use the camera (would be a REALLY cool feature but the hardware wouldn't support it) but is very handy for astronomy fans.

Handcent SMS
iPhone SMS clone. LOADS AND LOADS of options. A very nice SMS popup as well with quick reply. Loads MMS flawlessly. DID I MENTION TONS OF OPTIONS!!!

Heartrate
I have a heart condition and can't get my heart rate up too much. So this is a very hand app. Simply put a finger on an artery or vein and tap the screen very time you feel the pulse. As long as you have decent reaction time it is VERY accurate (+/- 1-2 bpm). Was $.99 but well worth it. Easier than timing it yourself.

Lethal Racing
Fun app where you drive a vehicle and try to collide with other cars. You build up money to buy bigger better vehicles. Overhead view (2D) but very fun using the trackball.

Light Racer
Fun tron game. Enough said...

Marine Compass
Marine style compass. Uses accelerometer to move the compass (semi spherical marine type)

Metal Detector
IT WORKS!!! Uses the compass to detect ferrous metals. Doesn't work on aluminum, copper, brass etc. Yet another one of those "Look at what MY PHONE can do!" apps.

Movie Finder
I goto the movies alot with the GF, and this app is just excellent. Full directory of movies in the area. Can search by release date, title, theatre. When you select a movie you're thinking about, you get a plot description along with the image, a link to a trailer, IMDb link, youtube search for that movie (for additional trailers, etc). It's simply the best... what else can I say?

Pandora
No explanation needed... GET IT. Great widget as well.

Papi Missle/Papi Pole/Papi River
Collection of games. Papi Missle is 3 missle pods that you "slide" in the direction to fire the missle. Bombs fall trying to destroy missle launchers. Papi Pole is where you balance this blob on the top of a stick to try and get cheeseburgers... lol. Papi River is simliar to 4Ever Fall.

PicSay Pro
Fun app to edit images. I use it to send funny MMSs to friends/family...

Pinball
A pinball app... Assign hardware buttons to the paddles.

Places Directory (Google)
Find stuff near you

Pure RSS
A RSS reader... Simple to the point.

(Can you tell I'm tired of typing by now... lol)

Remote VNC
If you use VNC instead of RDP (Like I do) then this app is AWESOME! Trackball controls the Mouse. Well worth the $4 for the full version! HIGHLY recommended. I have no problem connection to boxes running Ubuntu, MAC OSX, windows, etc.

Shazam
A MUST HAVE APP for all those (what was the name of that song?) moments. Works so well I was in a Home Depot and heard a song on the overhead and it picked it up!!!

SDCardWifiAccess
This app runs a very basic HTTP file server on your phone. You open the app and it simply says "Point browser to http://123.123.123.123:8180 and you get a webpage on a PC that is all the files on your SD card. Cannot download directories or multiple files at once, but very handy if you need a file off your phone and have no cable/PC running bluetooth. Works with Wifi (192.168.XXX.XXX) or with 3G.

ShopSavvy
I can't say enough about this app. I'm one of those people that don't mind buying stuff online to save some money, as I can wait for shipping. This app is SOOO handy for price comparisons. Also the "Wish List" feature is cool too. Me and my GF are going to be moving in with each other... so as we are walking around places looking at different furniture items, lamps, nick nacks, etc at Target, Walmart, etc etc... I may not want to buy now but atleast I'll remember! The database seems to be much better than Compare Everywhere too.

Fed Ex & Simple UPS Tracker
Seeing as how I buy alot of stuff online, I like being able to track my packages. These are simple apps to do just that. Haven't found one for USPS yet though.

Spectral View Analyzer
Very cool app to show in colorful graphs the "Spectral View" of sound waves. The mic on this phone is amazing. The free version has a 0-8Khz range, while the paid version is 0-40000 I think.

Speed Forge 3D
Another one of those "Android has cool games tooo!!!" apps. 3D game flying a jet type thing around a race track. Kinda like mario kart where you can shoot missles and lay bombs to destroy opponents.

Splat: Bugs II
You splat bugs on the screen... wide touch area so you can get some killer combos.

Stumble Video
I'm a stumbleupon freak.. I love stumble video and now I can do it anywhere!

Task Manager 1.11 (or whatever version is out now)
Decent Task Manager that doesn't seem to ever kill the apps you don't want to. Won't kill Phone and restart the network, won't kill Sense UI. Has an ignore list too. Is smart enough to kill the APP but not the widget and cause it to restart. Take Music for example. I use the widget. Every other task manager I've used if I "Kill All" it kills the player as well as the widget. Facebook too, as well as others. Task Manager seems to be a little smarter. Also comes with a simple "kill all" widget shortcut (1x1)

The Weather Channel
THE BEST weather app out there. Great radar with animation. 36 hour as well as 10 day forecasts. Don't use the widget though. It drains the battery... Also has a stream on demand weather forecast. Shows local conditions then a short video from the weather channel on your region's forecast. Very fast and good quality.

Wave Secure
Comes with the Modaco Unofficial 1.2. Allows you to perform several remote functions via web interface or SMS. Ability to backup SMS/Contacts/Call Logs as well as wipe them. Ability to sync media (not practical if you have gigs on your SD card) as well as the ability to lock your phone remotely. The lock is pretty secure for your "average" phone "thief." Allos you to display a custom message on the lock screen. IE: "This phone is being remotely tracked, please call (555)555-1234 to return." Yes, can track with GPS and display a Google Maps map with the location layers on them. Ability to track every 15,30,45,60 minutes.

WifiTether
Very easy to setup and use Tether app. Speeds are incredible. On my PC I'm getting 1.8-2.2 mbps and .5-.8mbps upload! (REQUIRES ROOT!)

Yellow Book
Very similiar to "Bing" for Windows Mobile apps. Faster and simpler in my opinion. I like it better than Bing. Has voice search and uses network based location and pulls up major streets in your "rough area" to localize searches. Very handy.

P_R_N,
Thanks so much for taking the time to write up the apps you like and why.

I, for one, really appreciate it (and am loving SDCardWifiAccess :) )

Thanks!

Seconded. Very useful info on apps I've never heard of, or apps that I have heard of but wasn't sure of.

Thanks for taking the time.

No Problem! I'm always happy to give an opinion... sometimes its not really agreed with, but I'll give it none the less...

If only I had some writing skills I'd do reviews and stuff. I download alteast 10-15 new apps a day to try.... not keeping many of them simply because I wouldn't have a use but its cool to try none the less.

The apps on android are MUCH better quality wise than windows mobile apps (which I've been used to for 6 years). Not as pretty as iphone YET. As much as I'm not that impressed with the droid, and how much I HATE Verizon, I'm glad Verizon is hyping the hell out of it. Close to 1 million units... that's a huge influx in less than a month. Now I think some devs will really start paying more attention to android. I honestly think Apple will lose its throne soon. With other manufactors building some EXCELLENT hardware these days, they won't have superiority for long. I for one am sick and tired of the poser sub culture that comes along with MAC people. I'm sorry, but you didn't goto coffee shops to hog their wifi and wear those horrible sweaters and drive a hybrid before you bought a MAC. You're a poser.

(see what I mean about that opinoin... ;) )

GMote
Use your Hero sreen as a mouse. Also streams MP3s to your phone from your PC. Also control media player from your phone on your PC. Over wifi Only.

Gmote now streams over 3G. I'm at work right now listening to music that's on my laptop at home. Friggin awesome!

holy freaking crap!!!

I had always seen Gmote in the Market, but never realized what it could do! I'm in love!!!

I was always waiting for Orb to make it's way to Mac, but now there's no need. Gmote does what Orb can do, only 1000000% better!!

Is there a way to watch mp4 movies using Gmote? I tried a few mp4 files in my iTunes library, and it started to load the video, but came up with an error. Regardless, this app is fantastic!!

I agree. Gmote rocks! Paired with my bluetooth headphones, I feel like I have my own theme music in my head.:p

I just tried a 3gp video (shot earlier from my Hero) and got the "Media file type not supported" error. Oh well.

with regards to Gmote....I have only been using it today, so I don't know if this is normal behavior, or linked to what I've found.

I am able to use the mousepad feature flawlessly, so I know the phone/computer are connected to each other. However, i am trying to browse my files and the phone says "fetching list of files" non-stop. It just gets stuck there. Earlier today when i first installed it, the files came up instantaneously.

I am connected to wifi and have a very strong signal.

I went to Gmote's website, and it appears that there is an overload on their servers. Could this be related to what my issue is?

The site has been off and on for a few days. It won't affect Gmote's performance though.

To learn about "port forwarding" go to PortForward.com - Port Forwarding Guides Listed by Manufacturer and Model and find your router model. The directions are pretty clear cut.

I also have an Apple Airport Express wireless router so I had to open the same port # there as well. If you have an additional wireless router you will have to do the same.

Be sure to add an exception for Gmote in your firewall unless Gmote has already done it for you. I added exceptions for the opened port there as well (one for TCP and one for UDP).

I had trouble at first because of my Dynamic IP. Gmote would only stream for a day or 2 and then my IP address would change and I'd lose my connection. I found the solution here though:

No-IP - Dynamic DNS, Static DNS for Your Dynamic IP

Be sure to install the No-IP client software on your computer and set it up with an easy name. The name you come up with will become your static IP address. Just enter that name for the IP address in Gmote and you should be good to go.

i didnt see it mentioned by anyone, but i like the App/Game "Shot"

its a good time-waster i like to play when i have a few minutes to kill, there are hundreds of levels

I just purchased "Absolute Fitness" today. This app tracks almost everything diet related. You can add custom foods and serving sizes, etc. What I really like is you can build favorites and custom meals. It wil take a while to completely setup, but once it is done, it was only take seconds to record my meals. You can export and save the data too!

Absolute Fitness for Android
It was only 5 bucks.
