Are my reading comprehension skills rusty?

Compassion is cool!
So I thought I'd order a pizza from Papa John's. Under "Special Offers" there's an entry that says:

Any Large Pizza
Any Large Pizza* with up to 5 toppings, including Specialties!
$12.00

Now, the way *I* interpret this is...ANY large pizza with up to 5 toppings INCLUDING specialty pizzas. Right? Wrong! Following the asterisk leads to this:

* Up to 5 toppings or specialty.

Is it just me or does this seem downright misleading?

What's the confusion? The asterisk seems to say the same thing as the main sentence.

No, it does not:

Any Large Pizza* with up to 5 toppings, including Specialties!
It says ANY large pizza with up to 5 toppings, including specialties--meaning specialty pizzas are included in this 'up to 5 toppings' deal.

* Up to 5 toppings or specialty.
The asterisk sentence says 'up to 5 toppings OR specialty' pizza.

The two sentences do not mean the same thing. If they intend it to mean *OR* specialties, that's what the main sentence should say: "Any large pizza with up to 5 toppings, *OR* specialty pizzas, $12.00."

I read it as either or, but now I want to know if any specialty pizzas have more than 5 toppings.
Was the idea that I could get a specialty pizza with cheese, cheese, cheese, cheese and cheese?

LOL... ^

Well, cheddar, mozzarella, parmagian, fontina and a bit of roquefort. There you go. :D

If they left out the asterisks, I would understand it as this:
Any Large Pizza with up to 5 toppings--$12.00 or try
any Specialty Pizza with up to 5 toppings -$12.00
yay/nay? :D
Exactly!

If they simply said:

Any Large Pizza with up to 5 toppings, OR Specialties!

instead of:

Any Large Pizza* with up to 5 toppings, INCLUDING Specialties!
there'd be no problem.

This is a blatant advertising ploy-- the intent is to lure customers into ordering a specialty pizza and then adding toppings. They store employees won't say anything either until they get a few complaints about how their $12 pizza doesn't cost $12...

It is legal, but it is a reason for me, as an intelligent consumer, to not shop with that company.

Exactly!

...clipped quote.

So the answer to your thread title would be "no".

It's nutty why there has to be small print associated with certain items...like pizza

Now it takes me 10 times longer to order because I need to stand there, scratching my double chin (from too many pizzas :p ), trying to figure out what they mean.

No different than some phone plans. TMO said unlimited. Data was unlimited. You just got shunted to GPRS or Edge if you went over a certain amount. But you could still get data. So ad was legal if dicey.

Eh, I really don't think there were any malicious intentions here. Maybe could have been worded better, but I think most people will either pick one from the specialty list:
Specialty Pizzas - Papa John's Delivery or Carryout Pizza - Order Online and have your pizza delivered.
or just pick their favorite five toppings. I mean, when you tell them you are using the coupon, they would have to tell you that you can't add toppings to the specialty pizzas, that is a separate category, so I don't see any benefit for them to deceive people here. That's actually a good deal either way. I'll take The Works, please.:)

I assumed everybody would read my mind and understand that I ordered online. :) If you go to their web site and select 'special offers,' that's where this is. And I DO think it's malicious, because you most certainly CAN add toppings to the specialty pizzas--I always do. My favorite is the spinach alfredo, to which I always add 4 or 5 toppings. The problem with their 'special offer...up to 5 toppings...ANY large pizza...including specialty' is that unless you actively LOOK for the asterisk sentence, and just plunge in and choose the specialty pizza you want, you're immediately taken to the 'customize your pizza' page--where you can add toppings. It's only AFTER you've added it to your cart that you see it's not $12 at all, but $18 [or whatever, depending on how many toppings]. I find that deceptive.

Well, the one store in the area I live in now has been closed for better than a decade. The chain itself was more ubiquitous in the east, not so much here in the land of fruits and nuts.

:D

Before I moved back home to California in 2006, I lived in other parts of the country, including the east and south, and remember seeing ads for Godfather's. Now that I think about it, I really can't recall the last time I heard anything about them. My friend Google just led me to their web site, and I did a 200 mile radius search to find two locations 'near' me; the closest is in Barstow.

Firstly, never ass/u/me.

Secondly, if when you add it to the shopping cart and you see it's not $12 and you don't want to spend more than $12, there's no damage done, as it's not like you've ordered at and get told when it's delivered that you owe more than the $12 you're expecting.

Well, hell; that's only a [counting on fingers] four hour drive!

Of course, by the time I got back, I'd be ready for more food...
