Are previously opened apps always running in background?

Hello all,

I am a total new Android user. Are apps that you have previously opened and then switched out of still running (and taking cpu power) in the background? OR are those apps automatically shut down when you switch to your home screen?

Thanks for any insights! :D

Yes.

still running (and taking cpu power)
Not necessarily.

If you leave a music app playing and switch to something else, then yes it's going to be using resources. Same goes for apps running backups or whatever.

But for the most part, if the app isn't carrying out an ongoing task, it won't be hogging any power/processing power once you switch to something else. It will just sit inactive in your RAM until your phone needs the memory for something else and kills that app.

It's a common misconception with new android users that they need to use a task killer to keep their RAM empty. In actual fact it does more harm than good.

To expand on the above post:

For the most part, if an app is designed to continue to use CPU after it's not the active window, you'll see an icon for that app in your notification bar up top, telling you that it's still running. Apps like music players, navigation, and some online games are good examples.

However, there are apps designed to sync periodically in the background. These syncs often trigger a sync icon in the notification bar, but not always. If you're concerned about battery life, check your sync list and disable stuff you don't care about. Go to Settings > Accounts & Sync to see what apps are on auto-sync.
