Are there any ITouch-like Android device out or coming soon?

No, Im not talking about tablets either. Im just in the market for an Android device that is the like the iTouch. Basically, an Android phone without the phone part. Has anything come about?

An android device without 3G is pretty lame. The cloud is Google's claim to fame and without cloud access, you aren't left with much IMO.

Samsung has Personal Media Player (PMP) coming out sometime in the next few months. It will be like the Galaxy S phones but without the phone part.

You could be like me and get a Droid Solo. It's just a Droid you buy on Craigslist and never activate as a phone. Done, ipod touch dominator, the Droid Solo!!

Plus as long as you're in wifi, you can still make and receive calls and texts for free with just a few apps. Oh yeah!!! ;)

That's pretty much what I was going to suggest, used phone with good media and codec support, just don't activate it and you have a handheld that runs android.

Archos do a range of android devices geared up for media playback with no phone, from a 10 inch tablet down to a 3-ish inch tablet, something like 4 devices I think. I think they don't have the Market app on them but you can install apps via Archos's own app store, or apparently you can side-load any apps you want if you can download the apk file.

I would doubt it personally. The iTouch is an amazing PMP IMO. Android just isn't designed to be a PMP the way the iTouch is.

I'm one of those looking for a phone-less android as well. My wife and kids all want one but we can't jusitfy 4 data plans.

Get Droids from craigslist, woooot!!! About $100 each tops on craigslist (you can talk them down, got my gf's for $50) and you just never activate it :)

Look at the Archos 5 IT (internet tablet). I know you say 'not a tablet,' but the Archos 5 is about the same size as as an iPod Touch, and it's the same deal with running on wi-fi. Having said that, the idea of an unactivated phone never crossed my mind! That's a great idea...

i picked up one of these http://www.archos.com/products/ta/archos_32it/index.html?country=us〈=en
from sears and with my GF discount + 2 years replacement i paid $140 then an hour late i sold my iTouch for $100. now it doesnt compare to the touch but for my needs its perfect. its smaller and the main requirement was bluetooth, the rest is just a bonus and im pretty pleased with it. if you want a basic android media player this is one to check out

Whats the use of such a machine?

Devices like this tend to be cheaper than their phone counsins. It also means that if you are a blackberry user, but you also want to take advantage of the capability of an Android OS, you don't have to carry around two phones.

also as a carpenter and an outdoorsman i would prefer to risk a $150 toy then a $600 tool. so if i were to drop the archos down a 25 story elevator shaft or knock it into the lake while on my boat sure i would be upset but if it was my evo id be ****ing pissed.

like i said the 3.2 is a very basic media player. it has both wifi and bluetooth with a limited app store. it is what it is and for what it is its pretty cool.

and according to quadrant benchmark it runs some wicked ass FPS (tho i cant use any thing else to check but its no big deal)
