Root Are these apps ok to remove (thru shell)?

Hi.

I'm currently removing bloatware from my HTC Desire and would like to know if it's ok to remove these:
  • GooglePartnerSetup.apk/odex
  • Quickoffice.apk/odex
  • FriendStream.apk/odex (and widget)
?

The last 2 are. The first I need as o have Google partnership on my domain where gmail handles my domain email which I receive on my phone. I imagine if you don't use this, it can be removed but I can't guarantee that


Itwon't give you more space though.

I see you're on the stock Rom still. May be worth flashing a stock based custom Rom that is de odexed

Thank you. I just don't want to see that junk in the list of apps and among running processes.

Are there any advantages in using custom ROM? And what are the odex files for anyway?
 
Hard to explain maybe due to me not really knowing what Odex files are. If you de-odex, these odex files are replaced with dalvik cache. Its kind of like the dalvik virtual machine which holds information pertaining to an app etc.

Advantages are custom kernels, better features etc. But if its running how you want, maybe no need.

You can use titanium backup to "Freeze" apps. This will hide them from the app drawer and stop them running.

Yeah I know that but that would mean that one otherwise useless app will have to run/be present so the other useless apps behave the way I want. So I'm just wiping them.
 
Its a backup application. I would happily stick my neck out and say it is the most useful app there is for a rooted user.

I'm sorry, I gave it some thought and could come up with any scenario I would require a backup for any of my applications.

The most useful app I've stumbled upon up to this day was SMS Backup+ that backs up all you messages to Gmail account and then restores them right the way they were back. Helped me great when I swapped my Widlfire with Desire.
 
It depends how involved you want to be using your phone. Titanium can restore your phone exactly as it was after a factory resetm but its most useful for people who want to improve their phones with custom ROMS. Its an invaluable tool.

Its also handy for moving applications to SD card. If you schedule backups and regularly back up to your PC, if you lose your phone and get a replacement, you can restore all this information back onto the replacement as if it were the same phone.
