Help Are VPNs REALLY affective?

PrinceCorwin

For years I have used PIA as a VPN service but lately my subscription has run out and I'm wondering whether or not I should renew it or perhaps use a different one. When I download things while on my VPN, is my IP address actually anonymous or is it just another digital placebo to make me feel better?

Provided the VPN is completely secure and working correctly, your own IP address will be hidden and whatever your connecting to will see the IP address of the VPN server and not your own. Have a look at astrill.com that's one I've used in China, and do trust it. I've not used PIA, so can't comment on that one.

I can recommend AirVPN. Same speed as when I'm not running thru VPN and yes its more than a placebo provided you have no DNS leaks etc the only IP detected will be that of the VPN server you're tunneling through.

Hello PrinceCorwin,

Essentially, what happens is your ISP provides you with an internet connection. The service then encrypts this connection, making it anonymous and secure. Your ISP cannot see what you are downloading, because of the encryption used by the service. Other people online cannot see who you really are, because the server acts as a middle-man between you and any connections you are establishing, so all anyone sees when you connect to something is the server. Rest assured, you are safe and secure, even in the most insecure and dangerous hotspots and networks. You can also contact support directly at https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ for 24/7 live chat, or email helpdesk@privateinternetaccess.com and they'll be able to help.
