Sorry I can't answer your question.

However, please be patient. Believe it or not, most people have lives and don't spend their entire time on forums waiting for someone to ask a question! I'm sure someone will be along at some point and provide you with answers.

Though I can't speak for your phone, but in general it is impossible to install custom recovery with the bootloader locked unless there's a creative work around. Installing roms is normally flashed through that custom recovery and thus no custom recovery = no roms. Though some methods due exist such as bootstrapping or kexec to work around that fact, but the circumstances have to be right on the device for those methods to work. Changing the status icons is usually something that can be done by flashing the new icons in recovery, using a theme in the cm theme manager, or by options in a rom such as aokp.

You CAN install a recovery with a locked bootloader.

Without a recovery, you can NOT flash a custom ROM.

To change icon, i THINK you can probably change them yourself by editing the framework under the ROM zip ( Before you flash it ) or maybe ROMkitchen. Dunno what that is like on Xperia S though.

I, however have no experience with modding at all.
