Help "ask on connection" missing

Hello all!
got a prob with my girlfriend's Samsung galaxy precedent SCH-M828C non rooted. "ask on connection" missing all it does is charge. Im on Windows 7 Ultimate, x64

I have tried:
Reinstalling drivers
Restarting phone, and computer multiple times
Using different USB ports
check the USB setting (Home>Settings>Wireless & Networks>USB connection). set on "Ask on connection" so I can chose charging or mass storage.

It works on a old XP that im never around, We don't want to teather the phone. I just want to transfer files back and forth.
Any suggestions?

Run Multi Mount SD-Card Free. It'll put an item in the notification pulldown that the SD card has been mounted and allow you to turn on/off use of the card by the computer.

Thanks, I tried that, didn't work...turned out to be the cable, i did not get a cable when she gave it to me but have found one that will work-thanks again
