Help Assign action to volume side buttons?

My first post, and I'd like to open by saying thank you to everyone who participates on this great forum. I just got an ATRIX as my very first smartphone ever, and it's a wonderful device.

Is it possible to assign a function to the hard volume buttons on the side of the Atrix?

I want to control my music player using the side volume buttons. My goal is to make the UP button assigned to control PowerAMP media player's PLAY/PAUSE function, and the DOWN button to control the NEXT/ADVANCE function.

I'm running LauncherPro btw. Non-rooted.

I also wondered about reprogramming these buttons since ringer volume is not something I need to change w/o looking at the screen. What I'd like to use it for is to activate voice dialing. Sure I can program the double-click home, but there's no tactile feedback for when my eyes need to be on the road.

I love my new Atrix but my old Blackberry 8800 allowed me to program the perimeter buttons. I hate to lose functionality I had and relied upon for years.

Anyone have ideas on safe voice dialing activation?
