Help Assigning SMS Tones to Certain Contacts

I am trying to assign a different Text Message tone to certain contacts (girlfriend, dad, co-workers, etc.) Is there an easy way to do this? I'm seeing a way to assign a different ringtone in the Edit Contact menu, but not SMS tone.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You'll need a third party sms app. There's alot to choose from, top choices are Handcent, Go Sms Pro or just a notification like Sms popup or Popup Notifier.

Been using Go SMS Pro and didn't realize I could do this for individual contacts- thought it was system wide.

I like to keep my electronics 'pure' sort-to-speak, and am a bit of a minimalist so it's a shame that I have to get something 3rd party to do this. I just installed Handcent. It looks like a child's coloring book. I suppose I will wait a bit to pass judgement as I automatically hate anything new. I can't believe in this day and age, of the craziest smartphones ever, that I can't do this. I had a $20 phone that could do this. Oh well.

I totally get you there!!! Go SMS looks the same but the good thing is it can be customized to be more adult-ish.

I always seem to be promoting this ( not involved in any way) but I use handcent sms app and it does what the op asked. There are lots of settings and widgets to choose from. Try them both as you have nothing to lose.

If you don't want all the hub bub just try Sms Popup or Popup Notifier it will work along with stock messaging app.

Ah! SMS Popup seems more like the route I want. I'm going to test it out here in a few. Thanks!
