Root assistance with keeping a rooted phone updated

Good Evening,

I rooted my htc evo 4g a long time ago. I forgot the rom that I am using and I love the ability to use the phone as a hot spot.

I would like to know how I can keep the phone updated to combat security risks and other concerns. any assistance would be appreciated

All you would need to do is flash a rom that had the update included. I would try mikg 3.11. I'm on the phone so I can't link.there is a sticky at the to of this forum that had a link for roms and kernels. You can go there and find a rom to your liking

Welcome to the forums!
If you are talking about the CQ? (something like that), not really sure what, or if that is of a big concern with the recent roms.
I would try MikG v.311...a sense based rom,

or,
Decks Reloaded (in my sig), an aosp based rom.:D
If you rooted a long time ago, could I safely assume you are s-off?
Do you remember what root method you used? (just curious):)
Both of those roms I think have the hacked hot spot.

thank you for your replies, so that I understand, the programmers or developers continue to update the roms to comply against security risks, performance, and other issues? wow, i am really behind. Yes, I am s-off.

so if i flash the rom to a newer rom will it change the settings and such?

yes but I dont understand what you mean by settings...the security settings? yes....your personal settings, yes because it is a fresh rom install.
Do I understand your question?

android version 2.2
baseband version 2.15.00.11.19
kernel version 2.6.32.17-gee557fd
browser version websit 3.1
and pri version 1.77_003
prl version 60687

Well, like ocn said, you can use Titanium Backup to backup your apps and app data, and you wont wipe your sd card, so all pix/videos etc will be saved.
Also like ocn said, make a nandroid backup in case something goes awry.

since the phone is already rooted all i have to do is flash the rom, correct?
yes, just pick the rom you desire, read the op about it, and follow this guide for flashing,
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html
Scroll down to the "Life after root" and you will see flashing instructions.
I usually wipe 3 times...all except sd card, no wipey sd card:)
MAKE A NAND BACKUP (is that loud enough? lol:p)
What recovery do you have?
I/we recommend Amon Ra recovery, clockwork recovery is buggy I hear.
I will post a link for it if you need it.
Any questions, just holler. we be here;)

Edit: here's another guide to flash MikG...see post 3, skip step 4

Yeah, like the others here have said, updating to a newer rom will likely solve a lot of your security concerns.

Also on the security front, I'm pretty sure android sandboxes apps in a java vm, and applications are (in my opinion) more of a risk (especially the browser)... Now, that's my opinion based on a bit of my findings. But luckily, apps are updated fairly quickly, I know I get maxathon updates all the time. Almost annoyingly so ;) Which isn't to say that they are 'safe'.

For instance, one of the more recent hacks exploited a flaw in webkit to launch the attack. And by more recent, I mean a few months ago...
If interested in that particular attack, google curiosity pwned the cat, you'll be looking for a wordpress page. Interesting to say the least.... and impressive IMO.

thank you for every-ones assistance, just installed the mikmik 3.11 hopefully i can still use the phone as a hot spot. I am excited. is there a guide for this rom?
Well, here is a shortcut to that particular version. Its part of the full site.
I spent alot of time there when I ran that rom.

v3.xx
Lots of themes, mods, etc and help there as it is dedicated to that rom.:)
