assistance with root, flashing .apks etc

Clunge

Newbie
Received my device today, just enabled USB debugging and I've downloaded a .apk file to run z4root. But I don't know which file manager to do it from.

I do want to upgrade to these great sounding ROMs aswell but I don't know which, where to download it or how to flash it

also, what .apks are worth downloading and where can I download them from? I was hoping for a facebook one but I don't know how reliable the sources are.

right now I just need to root the device I guess which I'm trying to do without much knowledge.

also is it possible to have an antiviral application?

________

Ok, I've managed to root my device and I now apparently have superuser access. Which apps am I looking to install? thank you.

It's really about personal preference What do you want to do? The first thing would be doing a Google search for "newest android market" and installing it so you can see paid and free apps on market.

Tweak it and see how fast you can get it? The Optimizer Toolbox, Cachemate for Root, and Root Uninstaller are good. Add the widget for ES task manager, which should already be installed, and the widget for Cachemate after you have installed it. The Es widget with kill apps in memory and free it for use, the Cachemate widget cleans disk space. Optimizer helps you tweak and mange the system for best performance. Root uninstaller allows you to uninstall system apps which a lot of uninstallers don't.

All these are also good for games and apps because you can run the two widgets before and games or video and you can run Optimizers system scan for an extra boost. These are also handy even with a custom rom.

First of all, thank you.

I tried to download the newest android market via an .apk but it just doesn't work. Do you have a link?

I already have the task manager which is working fine and have been killing apps. I'm going to try track down those once I sort my market issue.

Everything seems to be working ok besides youtube, it has flash installed but using the dolphinbrowser it won't play the videos

my charging thing always seems to say 57% -_-

don't know if this is useful for finding the ROM

Just google "appname_here.apk download" and you will find it. If not torrents are another great way. I have about 1200 apps on dvd now using torrents. will I ever use them? Probably not but fun to play with.

I'm familiar with torrents :D

anyone able to help me with what ROM to install and where to find it?

also, my HDMI cable registers on the device but nothing shows on my TV. Is this an issue with the device or do I need to do something with the television to make it work, besides switching to the HDMI channels?

HDMI only works when playing a video through the default player or the gallery player. Start the video then press the menu button and ti should display on the tv.

As far as the best ROm Tim's 5a is the best and most current rom

Use your PC for browsing google app store, or Amazon app store. See something you like?

Then use your favourite search engine and search for "android mobilism" and "android DroidAppz" and you will find alternative ways of getting those elusive apps onto your android device :D

I would not trust apks from open torrent sites, like demonoid or TPB, only from torrent sites such as torrentleech or IPT or other such closed trusted sites.

If usenet is your thing, then look inside the group alt.binaries.inner-sanctum for a daily dose of android releases.

Have fun.

Downloaded a bunch of games and apps from apad.tv, but still had to track some down because I've still not managed to get hold of the full android store :(

As you're here Lfc', would tim's5a rom be compatible with my device and where on my SD card would I put

I'm guessing in the immediate directory? and do I literally just turn it on and it will flash by itself?

cheers again man

Before you flash with tim5a rom, we need to know what model you have.

Let us know the result of the menu shown here please:

menu/settings/about device

Then we will take the android market store problem on after that.

Oops, seems you had answered the model question earlier, sorry :P

Right, you will never get full android app store on your tablet, you will only ever get what it wants you to see, and then it won't let you install paid for apps. As I posted, you need to find alternate ways to get them, it can be done, it's just you have to think out of the box.

And yes, tim5a rom is compatible with your device, it's a zip file, you unzip the file, copy the 2 files onto a clean sd card, so they are in root directory, or the immediate directory as you so eloquently said :)

Then put the sd card into your tablet, then power up, it will boot & upgrade, remove the card, delete the files off the sd card so you don't upgrade every time you put the sd card back in, and reboot, bingo - you now have it as best it can be right now.

Then we need to put the new market app on after that.

I flashed it but I now have a number of issues:

I have to calibrate the screen everytime I turn it on

the green android guy can sit on the startup screen for absolutely ages and the device won't start up, so I reboot it and it starts up 40% of the time.

in the video player, music player and the gallery none of my files will show up now like before I flashed the device. FIXED, media scanning was off for performance improvements.

aside from that, things are pretty good. I love the keyboard!

Backup the sd card, reformat it then recopy the firmware files back onto the sd card, then maybe try a hard reset, a soft reset, and then a reflash, should settle down after that.

Media scanning - after you have scanned, turn it off. Turn it back on only if you have new items to scan and if the media players haven't seen the new media, but try to keep it turned off if you can.

it took 4 resets to turn on this time, you think the reformat, hard/soft reset and reflash will fix the startup issue?

what's the difference between hard and soft reset? and which are which?

cheers

Hard reset is pressing in the reset button on the side of FT3. This is normally used when the unit does not respond.

Soft reset is a factory reset by powering on the tablet holding down the power & menu & home buttons until you see the recovery screen start.

And yes, imo I think it will fix it, and be aware, some SD cards can have an error when writing the files onto it, so it is worth redoing it all over and formatting the card before you put the files back on rather than using the same process you did just before.

yeah my card had an error but I managed to fix it.

will give this a go once I back-up the files I want :o

so I'm formatting the card, installing the firmware, doing a hard reset, then doing a factory reset.. then installing firmware again(?)

just doing the recovery now, then I'll restart the device. REALLY hope I've got this right.

spelling mistake in the recovery screen haha. "pleae" instead of "please."

it's powered on correctly first time so far. :D but my calibration is still resetting

2nd startup, perfect:p
____
now I've tried to turn it back on again and it's stuck again.

it only does it once I've restored all my apps and have my media card in?

If I remove my media card before powering on, it starts up instantly?

Just to be sure, you don't have any firmware files on that card anywhere right?

Try a different, smaller or bigger, card if you can. Or try it totally empty of any files.

Certainly not, I decided to delete some of my video files though and since my sd card isn't absolutely bogged down I've had absolutely no problems. Except my camera for a short amount of time just had a static image showing. But I did a hard reset and it is working fine.

So far so good, I'm sure I'll be back with a new issue for you to sort for me ;p thank you so much for sorting all my previous issues. I am looking for a good homescreen to try out though, as I don't like launcher pro and the stock one is kinda boring.

All I need now is to update my app market, I think it's 2.2.7 right now.

To the other poster, I think my card is a class 4 or 6 kingston.

Market now updated.

I liked golauncher EX (or something similarly named) but its permanently in portrait which is annoying. Can't find the others in the market.
