Telephone companies charge customers a $1 per line fee to have access to 911 emergency services and this money is supposed to go directly to the 911 call centers.
However, local officials in multiple states have filed lawsuits with both AT&T and Verizon for allegedly offering big businesses a reduced 911 tax, which in turn means reduced funds going to the emergency call centers.
