FYI, for the cheapskates like me, the AT&T GS2 is available for $134 after $15 store credit and no tax

Here is the deal I am talking about:

"Purchase any Android phone or tablet from AmazonWireless and receive $15 in promotional credits--$5 for Amazon Appstore for Android, $5 for Amazon MP3, and $5 for Kindle content. Credits will be applied to qualifying accounts automatically within 2 days of shipment and are valid through November 12, 2011. Limit one promotional credit per phone or tablet per customer."
 
Only problem with Amazon is if you have an unlimited data plan you will lose it. They don't seem to be able to grandfather it on an upgrade.
 
I'm hearing that the Nexus Prime is headed for at&t. Hopefully Amazon has a deal like that.
 
Places like Wal-mart and Best Buy can do upgrades and you can still keep unlimited data plan if you are grandfathered in.

Wal-mart has the phone for $148.88 in a lot of places. I personally went to Best Buy to price match yesterday without a hitch, and was able to keep my unlimited data. The only problem is they charge tax on the full retail price of the phone (ended up being $45.08), but it's worth it to me to be able to keep my unlimited data plan.

They charge tax on the full price of the phone LOL How could they do that ? I never heard of that.
 
I dunno... I was looking at buying at the Target around here too, and they said the same thing regarding the tax for the phone.

California's broke, so I guess they're taking money where they can, haha.

That depends on what state you live in. The DO NOT do that in NJ. It's not BB it's state law that requires tax on full price.
 
I got mine from Walmart in California and saved nearly $100 compared to best buy. I got to keep my unlimited data plan but it took a little work. I think here in Cali we get something like an instant rebate on phones with plans. I thought it was everywhere.

Yes, but the discussion is about SALES TAX. In CALI you pay sales tax on the full retail value of the phone BEFORE rebate/discount is deducted. In most/many states you only pay sales tax on the actual discounted price of the phone.

What is weird is Costco somehow gets around this. When I bought my Wife's phone at Costco back in April I paid Tax on the "Warehouse Price" which was more than the discounted price, but FAR less than the full price. The phone was $29.99 with subsidy and the warehouse price was $89.99
 
Aside from the obvious point about the final price you pay, are there any other subtle "gotchas" about buying from Best Buy, Amazon.com, Walmart, etc.?

I know with Amazon.com you can get jammed by the shipping delays since they start the clock ticking from the time you order the phone. By the time you receive the phone you could be a week into your 30 day trial period. If you choose to return the phone you have to take into account the return shipping time. When all is said and done you might be left with only 2 weeks to evaluate the phone, not the 30 days that you had in mind initially.

Are there benefits to buying from AT&T, either corporate store or att.com web site? Sometimes you do get what you pay for, so it's not all about price alone.

The discussion about sales tax is why i mentioned i went to Walmart. Walmart only charges sales tax on the discounted price of the phone. In California that is rare. Besides Walmart we have both Sams Club and Costco as an alternative if we want to avoid nearly $40 of extra taxes.

Not true. Well partially not true. You won't be able to select the unlimited plan when you purchase from Amazon but you just need to call AT&T after you receive the phone and they will switch it back. I buy all of my phones through amazon and have done this as recently as last month.

I have purchased several phones from Amazon and I have to say they are MY FAVORITE place to buy phones. Free two day shipping (it usually arrives in one day) and their Customer Service is the best I have ever dealt with. I would have bought my SG II through Amazon, but I had a TON of Reward Zone points so I purchased through Best Buy.

Also in response to the above poster who said you have to factor in shipping time when returning phones, thats incorrect. As long as you call them within the 30 days shipping time is NOT counted against you. I also love the fact that if there is a defect in your device they ship a new one too you and you simply ship the old one back in the box provided.

Amazon ROCKS hands down.

That poster would be me.

I got jammed because of conflicting information from different Amazon Wireless reps. I was told initially that Amazon would notify Sprint that I had returned the phone and cancel the service for me. Since I was suspicious of this I contacted Sprint who told me to wait until Amazon had notified me of receipt of the returned phone and then cancel service directly. Not sure why Sprint told me to wait (but now I can guess.)

Of course, Amazon received the phone the day AFTER 30 days had expired so Sprint said "Sorry, you lose! You owe us the full early termination fee, ha ha!" and then informed me that Amazon doesn't tell anybody anything, that is my responsibility. Amazon concurred with Sprint now that it was too late for me. Bastards.

In that case you are correct. If you are cancelling the line you have to call your carrier yourself to make sure. Amazon will contact them for you but most carriers will want to hear from you. The issue here isnt Amazon it is your carrier. When your dealing only with them its great. Adding in a third party is where the trouble comes in.
 
Costco has it for $150 and it comes with a case, car charger and screen protectors. Free shipping as well.

And unlike Amazon, you don't have to sign a contract or agree to terms with Costco. Once you get the phone, you deal only with AT&T. With Amazon, they can charge you early termination as well (if you move the phone of off your upgraded line).

Damn I wish i would have known this earlier. I actually called Amazon support and they told me i would lose my unlimited plan if I bought from them. grrrr.

Same in MA. CA and MA are both ruled by liberals and the moonbats citizens keep putting them in office so they can take their money. I learned this myself yesterday when I looked at my AT&T S2 receit and saw $30.81 tax on a $199 charge. In MA it is a new "directive" that passed on July 1. I wonder if there is a good lawyer out there who is willing to take it up with the state. I bet it's illegal (paying $199 and pay tax on $492).
 
I got my SGS 2 at a local AT&T corporate store. They price matched the Walmart online price (149.88) after they told me they couldn't price match Amazon. The sales clerk just went and downloaded the Walmart web page, showed it to the manager, and they gave me that price.
 
Walmart shows $219 for me for upgrading a line (without upgrading a plan). Sadly, my stores won't price match so I'll probably get it from Costco wireless if the Nexus Prime doesn't come out.
