Root [AT&T] rooting & deleting all things at&t

Tried rooting my note 2(SGH-I317) running 4.1.1 using xda thread

Odin indicated a success, and I see a superuser# app icon, but I still see all the AT&T software especially the AT&T Software Update app running which I can't stop or disable.

Questions:
1. What is the easiest way to get rid of or disable AT&T Software Update app

2. Why doesn't rooting the phone get rid of all pre-installed at&t software?

Rooting gives you full control over the phone but it won't do anything else for you. It just gives you the power to delete what you want. You need an app like titanium backup to delete the AT&T bloat. Or you could flash a custom ROM and it will have all that deleted for you. Be careful in deleting system apps. There is a list on XDA on which apps are safe to delete. You don't want to delete apps that mess up your phone.

I've rooted many phones and it's easier to just flash a custom ROM. Go to XDA Forums and you'll find all the information there.
 
If you want to prevent updates (I have in my Note 3), install Link2SD, look for the AT&T Update app (I'm running a ROM that never had it, so I can't look for the exact name, but it's AT&T and it has update or updater in the name) and freeze it. It'll still be there, but it can't run, so it can't update your phone (or notify you that there's an update).

Rooting does only 2 things:

1) It installs su, a program that Android leaves out. That's the app that "relogs" you in as superuser.

2) It installes a superuser app, like SuperSU, because you're being given the opportunity to deny superuser status to an app that asks for it (unlike in pure Linux, where you tell the OS to run the app as superuser). Without that it would be easy to write a virus that would, in effect, tell the phone to delete all its firmware and become a lump of silicon. So when something requests superuser status, and you aren't trying to run a rooted app, you can say no, and the virus can't do anything bad.

IOW, as tube said, root gives you the ability to remove bloat, but it doesn't remove it for you. The president has the power to push the button, but becoming president isn't the same as pushing the button.

Is there a custom ROM that includes any standard Android applications, plus any installed by Samsung like S Note. As nice as the UI is compared to my last Chinese android phone(Android 4.1 or later), it looks like Samsung has polished up the UI. Don't know if this is true.

Yes, there are several Touchwiz/Samsung ROMs that have that. They also fine "tune" the ROM and make it faster and smoother than what came w/the phone.

Even though the instructions seem pretty simple to root my note 2, I am getting a pass status on the rooting but it isn't actually rooted. When I tried to it again, the superSU app was removed. Root Checker indicated that device does have proper root access. It is like subsequent efforts restored to initial state.

Someone that has been in the trenches probably "has seen that and done this." My fear is bricking the device.

I am thinking of going to an individual or maybe some kind of remote rooting site like RootAndroid.com and have them root the phone and then flash a custom ROM maybe like Omega ROM. They are guaranteeing success. Since I can watch them, and with the phone now rooted, I can hopefully do future flash ROMs myself.

1. What do you think about the strategy of just paying someone that has a lot of experience to do it and then watch and learn.
2. What do you think of the Omega ROM and do you have any other suggestions of ROMs that completely remove everything AT&T that work on AT&T Note 2 (SGH-I317, android 4.1.1). I understand that any suggestion would be subjective.
 
Have you tried reinstalling the Super SU app or Superuser by Chainsdd? See, if that works.

Paying is a waste of money, IMHO. Read and research before you root or flash custom ROMs. If you have gotten this far, take the time to learn it and then you'll get the confidence to tinker a little bit more.

Now, it's your money = your decision. If you don't like to tinker or experiment, then I wouldn't continue on the rooting/flashing ROM path. There are some great youtube videos and XDA forums have step by step instructions. People brick their phones because they don't READ and follow directions.

Ultimately, it's a matter of if you have time, the willingness to experiment, a little bit of tech savvy (not a lot, just a little bit), and want a nice running phone. I'm rambling a little bit here but good luck in whatever you do. Rukbat or others will probably chime in and give you better information.

As far as ROMs, for the Note 2 you have some choices:

4.3/Touchwiz
4.3/Touchwiz w/Note 3 features (2 ROMs and both are very good)
4.4.2/Kitkat but no Touchwiz (It's like having a Nexus)
4.1.2/Touchwiz : lower android version. Never tried it but they are probably very smooth because they have had time to tinker with them.

I thought that before I could install any app that needed root permissions, that the phone must first be rooted. So I have been trying to complete the root as a first step, but I am not sure that what I am using is first unlocking the boot loader. If not could this be the problem?

The first time I did this SuperSU was installed but did not work.

On subsequent tries, SuperSU was removed and never replaced. Also from the Odin3 v3.07 Log File a recovery.img and cache.img is being written to memory. This looks like a recovery and not a rooting effort. If so, why is a recovery being done instead of rooting, and maybe that is why I can't root the phone.

to anyone out there, does the Odin3 log file output give any indication why the phone is not rooting?

Also I have read that the boot loader must be unlocked before a phone can be rooted. I assumed this was done all at one time.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758 Try this. It is extremely easy and safe. It will either work or fail. But will do no harm. In the other method. You missed step 5. Had you updated superSU. It would have disabled knox for you. Same step applys here too.
 
I did the research and used ************.COM

Worth EVERY PENNY!!!

I had my windows 7 box booted and ready to go. A data cable to connect the Sansung Galaxy Tablet to it via the USB port. A speaker phone for me so I could do things that needed to be done locally (plug/unplug cables). A high-speed internet connection.

Took about 20 minutes to do. PAY the extra to have the addtional apps loaded. Some I've never used, others I use on a regular basis.

[ROOT] Saferoot: Root for VRUEMJ7, MK2, and Android 4.3 - xda-developers. Please before you pay try this link. In the middle of that thread is a apk. Download and run it. Its safe and its free. For gods sake dont pay for something you can do yourself in thirty seconds. Why in the world would anyone allow installation of apps that may be harmful. That's ridiculous and scary. Edit. After doing some research this morning there are a couple of other points to consider about the above post for that website. 1. The poster is new...shows 7 posts total. 2. He never mentions the name of the apps or what they do? 3. There are similar posts like this in other root threads always by new members with low posts. 4. Do you really trust anyone who would advertise a paid website that forces you to install apps? Think about it! Here you are trying to root so you can remove bloat and now your going to pay someone who forces you to install more apps? Does this make sense? Of course not....
