Root [AT&T] Why Root a new phone???

jack58

Android Expert
Just got a new Samsung Note 2

My question is why would one want to root a brand new phone and take a chance on bricking it which is not covered by warranty if you do.

I can understand if the phone is a year old and getting outdated.

Rooting allows you to use root only apps (Titanium Backup, for example)... this allows you to back up all your phone's app/system data.

You can also flash custom ROM's (which is why I rooted my phone). I can flash a new ROM as often as I want... I have a Desire HD and didn't like HTC's Sense UI... I now run CM10.1, which is Vanilla Android (like you would find on a Nexus device).

Here's a thread that is worth checking out http://androidforums.com/faqs/617220-youve-went-rooted-phone-now-what.html

Sounds interesting indeed. However, since I just got my Note II yesterday, I think I'll enjoy it awhile before attempting any rooting. Gonna take a bit to learn all this phone can do.

Don't blame you for holding off. Rooting isn't something that HAS to be done... It's just something some like to do.

The Note II is quite a phone already... I'm sure that, when you're ready to root, others will be able to help you out :)

And if you ever decide to root make sure you do plenty of research and if your confused dont be afraid to ask for help here. ;)

Thanks! I'm probably a few months away from considering that.
I had the Note I before this and was considering rooting it as it was almost a year old, instead bit the bullet and bought the new Note II.

If you still have the note 1 i would recommend to practice and try root that first.

When I said a year old, I meant that was when the phone was introduced.
I bought mine new at Best Buy with silver status, had 45 day window to return it. At day 44, I returned it and got the Note II.
Main reason was Note I isn't getting JB anytime soon regardless what the news says. It was promised many months ago and they keep pushing it out more. I bet it doesn't get it anytime soon. Also I liked the newer features, faster processor etc.

Hopefully it is worth the extra $150 over the Note I.

rooting is super easy, and takes less than 5 minutes..it opens up an entire new world of stuff, you can make the phone run so much faster,(even though the note2 is a rocket anyways), endless custom roms, tweaks, and more..
Just read up on it first, and know what you are doing, and, most importantly, what to do if you have any issues.
