Atrix impressions vs Inspire

I am dedicated to using the Atrix 100% today but it started off on a bad foot. Set my Atrix as my alarm last night, woke up this morning 10 minutes late. I thought how did I miss those three alarms I set on my phone? Pick up the phone and it is completely off. Turn it on, it boots up. Check battery 70%. So, the damn thing just shut off sometime last night without anyone touching it while sitting on the nightstand.

I also find myself missing that extra .3 screen. It is really amazing how much more real estate the Inspire has.

After a good day of using the Atrix, I should have a pretty good idea if I am going to keep it or not. I will say if it shuts off randomly again, it is going back for a replacement. Someone else complained his was just rebooting randomly though out the day.

Wow sounds like a quality phone

Yea but I hear the atrix is more plasticky and warps easy when pushed on, reminds me of the droid x I had which I didnt like.

I disagree with that. You have to press super hard for the screen to warp, and there is no reason to press hard for anything. Its a touch screen not a push screen. The screen on the Atrix is solid with no warping.

One thing I do like is the notification sounds, and all the sounds are louder on this phone than the Inspire. I almost think that the Inspire has some type of bug that can be fixed hopefully.

Also the speaker phone on the Atrix is superior to the Inspire, on both my end and the other end. People say on the Inspire I sounded muffled or far away from the phone when using the speaker phone, on the Atrix, people say it sounds great. I did not do any scientific study, so I plan on testing both at the same time on the same call sometime later this week.

I agree the notifications are a bug because if you use zedge sounds they are so much louder than the stock ones but my speaker phone works great everyone has told me its clear and crisp

I may have a problem with mine that can be fixed by getting a replacement. My speaker is just not good. If I do keep the Inspire I will bring it back for a replacement. I have heard from other saying their speaker is great, and a few others saying they have the problems I am having. It may be just a couple lemon speakers (HOPEFULLY).

kstruck did you get the Atrix off contract, if so what pricing and where?

I was put off by the screen but I still want next Gen technology. I haven't ruled out owning both phones either.

I'm one that's quite open minded & positive. Im also platform neutral.

I've had loads of different phones, & chose to appreciate each for what they do best. No phone is perfect.

Out of the blue, the manager of the local AT&T store who I happen to be very good friends with, called me last night and asked if I had time to stop by. Just a few blocks from my house I was eager to do so.

Knowing I'm an IT guy with several phone lines he asked if I'd like to try an Atrix & Laptop style dock. What a perfect test, since I've worked on a laptop exclusively for a decade.

This particular combination is quite nice. However that's where it begins & ends. Far too overpriced it doesn't have a chance. That's too bad, as there are some distinct advantages.

Separately as a phone their are too many drawbacks to list. Together I can see loads of potential. That said I just can't imagine why it is priced so high.

Anyway that's my take on it. A good smartphone it's not.

Side by side with my Captivate, Droid X, or Inspire, the Atrix is simply not competitive, not even close.

That's why I was asked to evaluate this unit. In this AT&T store, the manager is very focused on continual training & success of his sales staff. It's no wonder they are the largest & highest volume COR Store out of the ten stores in our city.

I really dislike the atrix but i dont consider myself a fan boy.

Is it possible those shut downs had something to do with "first day use" ie, some kind of updating/updating bug? I know my inspire and my 3gs did some very odd things in the first 24-48 hours of having them that i was never able to repeat so....that issue could be temporary.

I always give phones a week or so before i start making up my mind....for example. The battery on my inspire SUCKED the first 1 to 4 days.....now its getting better and better...i don't know why....but it is.

Care to elaborate?

Sure, since you've asked. I purposely kept my report rather generic to avoid coming across as too harsh on this model. As a brand I like Motorola. I've had more than 15 of their phones including my Droid X which is quite nice. Most of my dissatisfaction centers around the fact that many "little things" that moto normally does right are absent and the list is long. Specifically this phone is sluggish, and it's got the worst Motoblur version yet. That's a huge drawback as the interface between it and vanilla Android is huge. With this latest round of software lock downs preventing rooting as we know it, this is a very limited phone. If I was on my computer instead of my smartphone I'd ad more.

Suffice to say, this is far too competitive of a market for this phone to stand out & survive. Furthermore it is with regret that I'm afraid Motorola themselves are walking a tightrope since iPhones are now part of Verizons lineup. Saved once in the USA by the RAZR, I doubt any of their Androids will be strong enough to save them if the Apple Army continues at this pace.

I'm no Apple advocate, even though I use some of their products. Why? I'm severely repulsed by their arrogance, superiority act, and over the top misleading marketing. The egomaniac CEO flexing his power, influence & personal agenda is out of control.

Jobs is not as bad as you think. If you ever get a chance to watch biography on A&E (i think).....see if you can find the one on Pixar studios...it will change how you look at Steve. He is hard working, dedicated, innovative, and understands people and how to make something successful. Questionable marketing and buisness practices or not.

i agree with what you have written here. i predict the atrix will flop.
Just got the Atrix about 3 hours ago. Spent about 2 hours setting things up.

First, I am not impressed with the Atrix screen at all. The yellows are really off and the colors in general look washed out. To me the Inspire screen has better color and seems more vibrant.

Motoblur - Never used it before and having used Sense, I can say I really do not like Motoblur at all. It may take some time getting used to it, but Sense is overall better IMHO.

Screen size - I really like the screen size of the Inspire compared to the Atrix. 4.3 vs 4 makes a difference. I also like the size of the Inspire itself, but that is just a personal preference.

Build - I like the feel of the Inspire better. Seems more solid. Atrix is not cheap feeling at all, but Inspire has a better feel.

Speed - Both are fast and so far I do not notice a difference at all.

I like the fingerprint reader -some added security is not a bad thing and it works well.

Just a quick impression and I am sure I will find things I like better as time goes on. It has only been three hours, but the Inspire impressed me immediately, the Atrix not so much.

Unless things change drastically, the Atrix is probably going back.

I really wanted to like the Atrix, and I hope things change. I am not going to use the laptop dock or the media dock but I did try the car dock, which I really like. Hate having my phone sitting on the console or in my lap while I am driving. Car dock makes it easy to use and secure.

Things that have been done "again and again and again" without change. (or minimal change)

Porche 911 body style
Italian pizza
Sneakers
Jeans
Scotch
Democracy

Are you suggesting that repetition automatically equals "bad"? The evidence suggests otherwise.

I think you need another argument to make that particular point (and please dont just re-state the "same" one again and again). ;)

Whats the old saying? "if it ain't broke....."

First off let me apologize for offending your phone, second you can compare whatever you want when it comes to some things, a little imagination can really improve on something like a UI like the difference between KDE and Gnome desktops for Ubuntu or XP and windows seven, can you follow me now? The inspire looks like EVERY other HTC phone, PERIOD. Your looking at the screen of an Evo.

And like Honeycomb compared to Ipad OS. I know what you are getting at. However this is a $399.00 evolutionary phone, not a $700.00 revolutionary phone. Deep breath, i am sure a revolution is coming soon! I always buy at the end of the product cycle because i prefer the final finished product over the new revolutionary buggy ones that have to be ironed over. The result is what i buy might be considered "stale" by some, and fully polished, ultra-reliable and inexpensive by others. I guess im the more "practical type", it has served me well as i always laugh at the myriad of problems the early adopters have and how they curse their "revolutionary" products. When something comes out new..sure ill get it...in its 3rd of 4th iteration (or as you put it...when its been "done").

Edit: Example, i stayes away from iphone until the 3Gs came out..and BOY was i GLAD i did! Same kinda thing ya know? I stayed away from Win7 until it had been out 15 months and again...BOY was i GLAD i did! I wont be buying the 5.0 mustang until 2013 to 2014 and after what i have read about the ticking engines and weak cluthces....i think you get my point.

Wow your captivate must be special. Mine with serendipity 5.0 wasn't as fast or lag free as the inspire. Sad to say that the atrix hasn't lived up to the hype like I knew it wouldn't oh well. I'm glad I and others have the best phone on ATT the inspire

My captivate is not special and either is the Inspire by side by side comparison, I am no fanboy of ANY phone I have no bias towards any device they ALL have their pitfalls.

And BTW wasn't it you that started the

"What's with all the Atrix ELITISM" thread? Am I sensing some of that here? Yeah, I think A LOT judging by your post.

I didn't mean to come across as strong as it may have read.

It's just that I'm a Silicon Valley Native, who owns an large scale tech corporation. I grew up in Los Gatos, which is not very far from the Apple Campus in Cupertino.

I am especially close to a lot of people at Apple and remember Steve Jobs when he was the man portrayed in the special on A&E.

However in recent times he has changed dramatically, and I am referring to a few years _before_ he was diagnosed with Cancer. He (unlike Steve Wozniak) let the money, power, prestige and all that, go to his head.

He changed from a really great guy and became an egomaniac.

I have a lot of respect for everyone no matter what their socio economic class. I am the kind of guy that really enjoys interacting with all kinds of people in the tech sector and in other endeavors and hobbies.

The _Only_ Line I draw is one that finds highly arrogant, narcissistic, self centered, condescending, acerbic people, like Steve Jobs has become, simply unacceptable.

But that's just my take on things.

Cheers... :)

I understand completely where your at, and I don't think that you have a "second rate" device by any means the phone is super nice, love the unexplainable, small 4.3in screen? ????? I personally am just enjoying the wave of phones rolling out now and am looking toward to seeing the superior devices, the technological advances and who stands tall in the ashes of the wake? Its a hobby to me, it all cool. You are a way smarter consumer than I am, bleeding edge has its share of heartbreak, this I know.

It's a good thing that we have choices as it's clear from the jabs in this thread lots of people have very different opinions as to what is important to them and what is not. One would think people could appreciate that without choices companies don't work as hard to innovate. I for one like aspects of both phones as no phone is perfect. I wish I had aspects of the Sense UI on the Atrix hardware specs and a solid body phone like the Inspire on the Atrix.

So until I start designing phones I will have to find the best phone for me made by someone else. :-)

Hi everyone! This is my first post here, but I've been lurking the past few weeks to get info on the Inspire. I finally got my Inspire after a lot of research about the Inspire vs. the Atrix and their features. My husband and I both previously had Iphone 3GS' so we were nervous about switching to Android.

My first impression about his Atrix was that the screen size looked quite a bit smaller. It was weird considering it is still .5 inches bigger than the old iphones. I think my eyes have just adjusted to the monster screen on the Inspire. I also didn't really care for the layout of the Motoblur, which I expected after doing research.

The Atrix does seem to have some great features that he will love such as the HDMI output.

I originally figured if I didn't care for the Inspire, I would return it and get the Atrix. I think I'm sticking with Inspire! I love Sense and the bigger screen. :) The only thing I will miss about the iphone is the compatibility with my ipod accessories. I can get over that though since I still have an ipod.

Thanks everyone for the great posts these last few weeks and for helping make my decision the best one!

...nicely said!

UPDATE:

OK, full day using the Atrix 100% of the time. Here are some of my thoughts.

1. Battery life - Its good. Surfed the web, received about 15 SMS messages, about 275 exchange emails, 50 gmail emails, twitter and facebook updating all day, made over 40 short calls and spent about 2 hours on phone calls give or take. Battery is about 40%.

2. Screen - Text is crisp and clear, web pages are crisp and clear. I have no problem with "warping" as some people have mentioned. It seems strong to me. Screen is bright but colors still seem washed out a bit, especially yellows. I also noticed some unresponsiveness when tapping letters on the keyboard or tapping icons, but that just may be some fat fingering. I did not notice this problem on my Inspire.

3. Overall speed - This phone is fast no doubting that. I did have a few sluggish incidents, but not enough to complain. Is it faster than the Inspire? Not that I notice.

4. Motoblur - Really not a fan. Just not impressed but this is a personal preference and everyone has their opinions on that.

5. Apps - I noticed at least one app that I tried not rendering properly. Not sure why. It is just a game that I tried that a co-worker said was a good time waster, but for me it did not play properly. He showed me the game on his Inspire, and it worked fine. This could be an isolated incident.

6. Car dock - Rocks. Love it. People hear me fine on speakerphone and I hear them perfectly. As soon as you pop the phone in the dock it recognizes its in the car dock and renders a car friendly screen. Well done. I wish they had something like this for the Inspire.

7. FingerPrint Reader - Again, I really like it. Not much to say about it since it works without a problem. Not once did it not recognize my fingerprint. In fact, I thought, maybe its not working so I had a co-worker try it and it would not allow him access to the phone.

8. GPS - Rock solid. Instantly found me correctly. Used it in the car dock and it was very accurate.

9. Motoblur (Social Networking) - Not working for me at all. There are a few motoblur widgets that are supposed to update based on my facebook account. Facebook app always updates, the motoblur widgets never updated once. Not sure what the problem is there.

Overall I like the phone better than I did yesteday, but I am leaning toward returning it. I really just prefer the Inspire and the larger screen not to mention the price.

I will continue to use the Atrix tomorrow and make my mind up by the weekend.

I realize alot of this is personal preference, but hopefully it helps someone who is considering both phones.
