Atrix WiFi Hotspot?

I am considering getting an Atrix 4G smartphone. I have never used an Android phone before, but because many of my friends have switched to Android I am interested in doing so too.

A couple of my friends with T-Mobile have been able to turn their Android phones into WiFi Hotspots. They have been able to connect their tablets to their phone's 4G connection and not need to buy a separate data plan for their tablets. Would I be able to do this with the Atrix 4G?

You would have to add a tethering plan to your phone bill but you could wifi share if you wanted. There isn't really an easy way to do it for free, not impossible but nothing straightforward. Tmobile is the most tethering friendly where as the other carriers try their best to charge you extra.

Welcome to the forum, we are glad you are here. Just so you know, this is covered in the main sticky at the top of this forum and at the top of the root forum (in more detail).

There are methods to "enable" tethering on your Atrix, you have to root the phone, so look into the root area of this forum to see how. Also there are posts (also in the sticky posts) that AT&T is starting to crack down on tethering and if they find out, which is not hard to do, they will automatically change your data plan to the $45/mo 4GB tethering plan. So if you really want tether, it would be better to just change your data plan to it.

Thanks for the welcome j101399.

Wow, $45 is a lot. Do I have to pay for my current data plan on top of that?

No, they will switch you to one of the tethering plans. It's not really a bad deal. I have unlimited data and pay $30 a month. On average I use 1G of data and 1G of Wifi every month. If you stream a lot of movies, that will eat up data.

As itsallgood said, they will basically cancel your $30/unlim plan and change it to the $45/4GB plan (Remember that plan is not unlimited, but if you go over, it is only $10/GB additional); so just keep an eye on your data if you do a lot of video streaming and such

I don't even think you need root. I know on the Inspire if you change the APN settings from Medianet over to the regular AT&T settings, WIfi hotspot is enabled. You might have to add the AT&T APN
