ATT isnt rolling out their 4g until 2013???

LTE wont be fully rolled out, meaning it wont be available to EVERYONE until 2013.

right now at&t is building LTE towers in my area. I have contractors come into my store very often now.


the "4g" we have is HSPA+, the same as Tmobile.


AT&T's logic:

instead of having to fall back to 3g, you can fall back to HSPA+ while the LTE roll out continues. Right now verizons LTE is only available in 2 markets, and wont finish rolling out until 2012.
 
MarcMaiden has a very good point, AT&T is making the wait much more bearable with allowing you to fall back on HSPA+, which is actually considered 4G. So you can surf with very good speeds on a 4G technology while waiting for a different 4G technology, that being LTE, to roll out to your area.

But, if you live in a pretty large city say New York City or Houston. You can definitely expect to get LTE much sooner than you might think.
 
Does anybody know if the Atrix can be made LTE compatible? I was told it already was by 2 company store employees. (2 different stores) I now know it's not. How can their "new flagship" phone not be compatible with their best of the "4Gs". I admit I didn't carefully research that part before buying, and I do love the phone. I don't want to leave AT&T, I would Much rather be on AT&T's 3g/H+ when not in an LTE area than Verizon's 3G. I'm in Charlotte, NC part of the week and I think it will be in the first group of LTE cities. This phone is SO much better than the Captivate in my opinion, and if anything I think I'd change to the buy it now, no contract price. I hear XOOM people are going to have to send their tablets to Moto for a free upgrade to LTE. Marc, or any other AT&T people have any ideas before my 30 days are up?

Just my logic:

The Xoom is offered a free LTE upgrade, and the Atrix is built in a way that teardown is simple (easy access to the guts of the phone.)

Maybe just a sign that a LTE upgrade will be available at some point?

It's possible, but I would think Motorola would at least announce a future upgrade like they did for the Xoom to boost current sales until the upgrade is available.

Verizon will be finished by then. 5-10mbps speeds and almost ubiquitous coverage across the continental US. AT&T won't be finished rolling out 4G by then. And when they do "finish", 4G coverage will only be available to like 20% of the people much like 3G is now(AT&T has no plans to introduce 4G where they don't currently have 3G, which isn't a large area).

What has Verizon done to me? What has AT&T done to you that would make you defend their network? Note that I'm not discussing how good a company is, their customer service, their devices, or their prices. This is just a discussion about the network. There is no room for bias. Show me where I'm wrong and provide evidence. Everything I mentioned is common knowledge.

This is AT&T's data network as of February 2011.. The dark blue areas are the only places you can be in the country and get faster than dial up network speeds(3G, 1-3mbps average). These same blue areas are the only areas that will have 4G coverage by 2013.

right, but you said AT&T's 4g covers "20%" much like AT&T's 3g.

Wrong,

even though verizon gets better coverage in rural areas (and in a lot more places in general), AT&T's 3g covers 75+% of the population. Their HSPA+ covers 98% of that, and LTE will be about the same as verizon when it rolls out. Because LTE is a completely new technology and new tower, AT&T has a better chance of expanding coverage, but it will take a while, just like verizon (in terms of 4g).

I agree, the coverage isnt as good as verizon. and im almost certain that verizons 4g lte devices get better speeds (and i hope when the first devices come out there will be enough coverage).

hopefully one or both of those changes :P

the point im making is that att even with the hspa+ is only getting me 1.5mb download speeds on average.... I dont care if its called 3g, 4g, lte, hspa+...if it only gets me download speeds of 1.5mb its unacceptable.

tmobile, verizon and sprint are all offering speeds incredibly faster than that.

I've got to agree with you.

I dare anyone to show me a download speed on their ATT device that exceeds 3.5 Mbps. Which is 3G speed. Good 3G speed, but 3G.

ATT has a different rollout strategy then other carriers and I think it might be better in the long run, so I'm not mad at them - but still, at least get up to t-mobile's HSPA+ speeds (5Mbps) before calling things 4G.

Well you are the only one on earth my friend, congrats. You have a great phone, with great network speeds. Unheard of in AT&T's customer base.

I get a consistant .8 - 2.3 Mbps with my Inspire "4G" - I get much better speeds than that with my iPhone 3GS. Why does the 4G service suck so bad for the rest of us?

at&t hasn't even turned on hspa+ in most areas from my understanding, and that is why you aren't getting 4g speeds.
 
The official roadmap for wireless services defines "4G" as download speeds of 1 Gig/sec for stationary devices and 100 M/sec for mobile devices.

Unfortunately, marketing departments can call networks whatever they want, but "4G" services aren't coming by 2013 either, so everyone might as well relax.

think about 'population density'. while hilarious, the verizon 'coverage map' commercials were misleading in that they made it look like most of the country could not get ATT 3G service. In fact, those few blue spots cover the vast majority of the population. I dreaded switching to ATT a few years ago, but the coverage in my area is good, and the speeds are great (3.5Mbps at my office, in the middle of a large commercial building). Once I leave the metro area... well, all bets are off.
