i use hotmail to get my emails on my DHD but ive had some with PDF files which i have not been able to open it. so the Q is do i need a ap or have i got it set up wrong.

Maybe the files aren't completely downloaded?

The PDF files should be on the SD card (/Download).
If the stock PDF reader doesn't read the files you could try RepliGo Reader (in market).

the email opens ok. i click on the file and it wont open or offer me to save file.

Did you look on the SD card (/Download) for the PDF file ?

You could do this with a file manager (e.g. Estrongs File Explorer, free in market)

EDIT: Just tried this: I did start the DHD stock (Adobe) reader and choosed PDF Files.
I found my mail downloads in /mnt/sdcard/Download/....
