Please explain to me how im to "intall" a sound file. Its on my system in the ringtone folder and plays when using my file manager. It rhows up in the mpsic menu on both gosms and in the system sound menu. When clicking on it it freezes and force closes.

On a personal note, dont appreciate the response with the rolls eye emoticon as if im stupid or something. But thanks for th response no matter how unhelpful it was.

Wow that was incredibly hard to read. And if it's your own personal ringtones your having problems with I think he mines try deleting them and then putting them back on your phone. But you said their on your system so that sounds like your talking about the stock ringtones.

Any particular reason why an older version of Superuser and its accompanying binary are installed, apart from being smaller? Do other, more recent versions of Superuser and company have reliability issues? For this exercise, I've managed to dig out the most recent versions of both files from my HTC EVO 4G and am considering dropping them into the filesystem.

Well the most recent version of su works fine since I updated but for some reason the binary won't update so I just leave it be.

It's actually quite easy. If you're on a Windows machine, all you need to make those changes is MagicISO and your favorite archiver that can handle .tar files, e.g. 7-zip, WinRAR, whatever. This is notwithstanding the updated files and Odin to flash the resulting file to your phone, which you may likely already have. ;3

What you do is extract the factoryfs.rfs file from the tarball, then use MagicISO to look at the filesystem and copy files to it. Then you create a new .tar file using the archiver utility mentioned above, then use Odin to write it to the phone.

For my part, I tend to use a Linux machine (I have both real and virtual machines) with a mount -oloop command so I can bring the filesystem online, then copy stuff into the filesystem. If you're a BSD type (e.g. FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, DragonflyBSD, MacOS X (based on Darwin, which itself is based on FreeBSD)), there is similar functionality; check your system's documentation (manpages, whatever) for more details.

It's a bit tl;dr, but at least it's something to get you started.

hmmmm update and transparent work fine, but now, regardless of where in the process i do it, if i flash gasmod as soon as the phone boots up everything starts force closing, launcher and all, and i can't get past all the damn f.c. screens.

Gasmod is based off the older version not the 2.3.6 update so flashing it over the update + deodex roms would cause that

Thanks. For some reason I kept getting an error message saying that the link was generating to much public traffic and was disabled. I was able to get it downloaded last night.

I also lost my 4g service when I installed the transparent tar. I have the methods listed here by razor & genovo to try to restore 4g to my device but have had no luck. Only thing I havent tried is the official samsung update that Woxx speaks of in his post....cant find it. Help and/or sugestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think you have to flash the rooted update.tar then you have to flash the transparent.tar. I did it that way and my 4g works fine. Also the samsung update tool is on the samsung website. It's under samsung galaxy attain software downloads.

I finally got my 4g service working again. I ran the official update from the samsung website then used odin to flash the transparent tar now everything is working correctly.

Thanks for all your help

Somple root instructions? I am not a pro at this and do not wish to be. I just want this thing rooted and working. Help?

It's not that hard to read posts as I'm sure it's been simplified. Flash the attain-rooted-update.tar(not in this thread) and then flash this deodexed rom

i flashed with odin the tar from shabby. thanks but no 4g so i see the two tar files up top and do i need to install one then the other? my 4g didnt work before i rooted the phone will it work after i install the two tar files. can some one give me some good detailed instructions? thanks for all the help

hey all, when you say 4g isn't working, does that mean you have no data connection at all? i seem to have the 4G icon but the phone status section says its running on EVDO.

Yes that's what it means. If you try to send a mms or go on the web it won't work unless you're on wifi

ok, then i guess i had zero issues with 4G at each step along the way, going to the update, the rooted update, and finally the rooted deodexed update. not sure why that is.

this ROM comes pre-loaded with a hosts file that's out to try to block ads. well, that breaks some apps like the free versions of FTPDroid and SSHDroid, which force the user to exit after displaying a message "warning: banners are blocked". furthermore i think its unwise to have to load almost 26,000 host entries into memory with this budget-performing phone.
