Attn: Leakers (OTA'd or not) and 1.5 > OTA'ers)

Hey all - my hboot is 1.47. Went from 1.5 to 2.1 OTA (manual install)

It was 1.47 at 1.5, and still is 1.47 at 2.1.

Well, here's a candidate for you, pkopalek. If your theory is correct, arothrock should be able to ROOT from his version of 2.1.

I still question whether people with the OTA can still root because many on v3 tried to go back to v2 and it wouldn't let them downgrade because the software version was lower. I suspect that this will remain true, but it's still worth a shot.

You're sure v3 can't > v2?

People have tried this PB00IMG.zip situation?

I think I'd be surprised. This was exactly my next idea to make sure v1 and v2's get OTA

And yes, but I'm not going to make him do try that. We'll find a phone to test with. I just wanted to collect some data before taking a rooted/rootable 1.5 phone to OTA and not be able to go backward.

It would be helpful for someone to test the MR2 RUU and see if they can downgrade back to 1.5 after the OTA, if they are brave. OR straight up flash the Root PB00IMG.zip, and see what happens.

But I've collected all the data I need here. Thank you everyone, for helping.

I'd do it, but my phone is in a pending ebay transaction.. Someone won it a few days ago, but has yet to pay for it... ;)...

Send me a link to the rooted zip and I will try it right now.......

Just go to the rooted information section for the Eris at the top of the the forums page. All rooting info is provided there, including the files for rooting.

Download PB00IMG.zip from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

Put it on your SD card,
turn phone off
turn phone on while holding VOLUME DOWN
see if it asks if you want to do the upgrade. it wont' even let you try if it can't.

When it says '[Action] to Upgrade' or 'Do you want to upgrade?', you can just pull your battery. If it gets to that point, it should work.

Unless you want ROOT. Then go ahead and do it. Follow the directions here to do the rest of the Rooting if you'd like. That would confirm further:

pkopalek, quick question. Does the HBOOT version have any affect on how the phone operates, or is just for flashing/updating?

Just curious to know if there is any disadvantage for v3 leakers (1.49) compared to OTA upgrades (1.46/7) being on the same HBOOT as 1.5. (Of course, other than the potential to get root access)

Usually, the HBOOT is upgraded to prevent exploits that Root the phone, or tamper with it otherwise.

If the HBOOT works, it works just fine. If there are no problems with it, it has ALMOST NOTHING to do with the normal functioning of the phone. It's just a bootloader.

Historically, they upgrade the Recovery.img or HBOOT to prevent exploits that are found to Root phones. The Incredible already got a new Recovery.img update (unannounced) after someone found an exploit with another phone that would possibly work on the Incredible.

It's the HTC/Verizon thing. Verizon wants these phones L O C K ED D O W N. They and Sprint are ridiculous about it.

D/L'ing it right now......prob be a little while, as I am not a paying customer of that site and am forced to have slow downloads

Here is an even worse scenario than not being able to root on leak V.x. It the hboot is not changed, then leakers might not ever be able to get an OTA again.

the only real difference there MIGHT be is how your phone shows on verizons system.

you see, if you look up my MEID on verizons system it still shows I am running 1.5...doing the leak did not update that.

"my guy" at verizon, who is very trustworthy, is wanting to test to see if the OTA updates this in the system.

that said, if you got the OTA, and trust me, send me your MEID so we can see if it updates your profile in the system....

i understand completely peoples hesitation to share something like that but i assure you there will be nu funny business.

Caddy, the OTA has a script to ping phones. If you are running v3, the ping will update the Verizon system to show you are on 2.1. If you are running 1.5, the ping will trigger the system to give you the OTA notification. I learned this from Verizon a few moments ago via tech support. If you read between the lines here, you will gather that folks on 2.1 will not get an OTA notification. Best advice... flash v3 if you have v1 or v2 because v3 is the final OS.

got the root pb00img.zip downloaded and restarted phone using volume down and power button...........so far it is past the loading screen and is now sitting at checking......

and now it is at do you want to start update?

I think this means it will work.......

Should I say yes???

Fast response pls

You don't need to say yes!

If you want root, go ahead and say yes!

LOL

There's a lot to ROOT. If you don't nkow what it is, don't worry about it. Just DON'T say yes!
