ATTN mods/admins - request for this forum

If you have a look at the Samsung Galaxy S2 forum, you will see that rather than having 4 different subforums the threads there just have a thread prefix such as Support, General, etc. I think that would work really well for this forum.

It's a lot easier to browse threads if you can see them all on one page without having to sift through 4 different subforums as well.

We could have: -

Root
General
Tricks
Support
Accessory

There's an option to filter the list of threads by prefix so you can still view just support topics, or just accessory topics, but you have a choice!

Anyone agree? :P

This is only being done on new forums. Its easier for the site admin to manager / create new forums as new devices become available. This has been in the making for some time:

http://androidforums.com/suggestion...ctions-sub-forums-vs-prefixes-vs-nothing.html

As you can see by the poll results, members were massively infavour fo keeping the current structure but due to the amount of work making each forum, it was eventually decided to do prefixes on all new forums.

I think its a good idea to keep the site easy to maintain like that. However, I much prefer the sub forums. I spend most of my time in the root forum and all the threads I want to help people with are in one place.

It would be a massive overhead to staff and resources of the server / database to make all forums compliant. I dont want to put words in the mouth of Phases but I really doubt this forum will ever get this.

Fair enough. If most people prefer the current design it probably shouldn't change for existing forums.

It seems to me like the prefixes thing adds an extra feature (the ability to view all threads re: a particular device in one place) whilst still keeping the ability to view specific filtered topics. I don't think it will create extra work for staff for two reasons; 1) The people who already post in the correct forum will likely post using the correct tag and 2) The people who don't post using the correct tag will have their post re-tagged, but mods already have to move these sorts of threads so it's not likely to cause any extra work for staff.

Plus I don't think this forum is busy enough for you to lose threads about rooting if they're not properly tagged :p

The SGS2 forum is busier than this one and it's pretty easy to follow, I've been lurking there for a few weeks.

No the extra work is tagging each post in each sub forum, then moving them out of the subforum. Big strain on resources. It's the same work to move or tag a single or handful of threads.

You'd be surprised re losing threads. When we need to find a previous solution, it can already be pretty hard

I'd imagine you could re-tag more than one thread at a time..

I have more experience with invision power board than vBulletin, but IPB had a select all checkbox at the top of a forum in the moderation tools so you can act on all threads on that page :p

I think admins can execute queries as well. Should only take a couple of minutes to move all threads out a subforum and tag them.

You can multiple select and move on vbulletin too.

In regards to the queries, were looking at 100 s of thousands of threads if not millions to implement across all forums. There's years worth of posts here. Even on the highest spec'd database servers, that's going to take ages

couldn't of said it better myself..

I prefer subforums, means if you know what your looking for...well boom, your straight there..

I was talking about just for the Desire forum not all forums :p

I like the subforums, but I really hate coming here and seeing 90% of the threads on the first page moved. I've never seen another forum do that kind of thing. So if prefixing is the only way to remedy that, I'm for it.

Sorry, yes I know that but are you talking about hating see the moved thread on androidforums in general or specifically this the desire one?

When I was a guide I did realise that the desire forum seems to be really bad for people posting in the wrong place. Other forums within android forums werent as bad.

I pretty much only view the Desire forum, so just this one. Maybe it's just my perception then, the mods save them up and move them all at once rather than as they're created.

problem is this place in general is massive and there are not many guides or mods. Unfortunately it is not possible to always deal with something as soon as it is created. So when they see them, they usually see them in bulk.

The guides or mods can set that "moved" link to expire in a set amount of time so they do disappear.

If you see something that you think should be else where, you can use the report button and ask for it to be moved. I find myself doing this quiet often, but there are a lot of posts that need moving.

But theres a famous quote:

"Every little helps" - Tesco

;)

Thread moved from the HTC Desire section to the suggestion box & feedback where Rob/Phases will actually see this.

I actually like the prefix system (now it's been laid out in a more visually pleasing way), and wouldn't mind it coming to the Desire HD section too. But I don't see it happening unfortunately :(

The decision was mainly due to the amount of linkbacks, etc, we have going into exsisting subforums - and whether or not a 301 redirect would be suffice to not do more damage than good.

If a particular device sub-community strongly and collectively wishes to move to the prefix system, bring it (the poll showing so) to my attention and we'll do some analytic checks to see what we think.

The implementation of the Prefix was to ALL Forums that only had the Root Forums. The staff is currently making sure all of the older forums with hundreds to thousands of threads are properly prefix so that the members can see all of the related threads when they filter :)

We do have various options to select multiple threads at once to move. As we don't want to confuse members and move threads to the wrong forum, we read EVERY single OP in the thread. The thing is, you're looking at 4/5 different topics it's harder to move them all at once. We go through the list and find all of the root threads that need moving and do a mass move for those. Then we go through the list again and find the support threads etc etc until it seems clean.

Please try to remember, all of the staffs on AndroidForums are volunteering their time. We are not paid to do what we're doing here. Every one of us have a full time job and/or in school and/or with a family that we balance. We're just really ethusiastic members that want to see AndroidForums do well. We make time out of our busy life so that the members have a better experience in the Forum. This can range from trying to welcoming new members, answering as many unasnwered threads as possible, making sure everyone plays nicely and moving threads to the proper forums. We aren't on here 24/7, so when we do, we do what we can so that's why you see those mass move of threads. It just shows how active and dedicated we are here :)

Yeah but in the case of preexisting forums, we could just mass label the entire existing subforum contents, move them to general and delete the subforum.

There are still downsides, as mentioned though.
