augen 7" 2.1

Can anybody explain to me how you are to get the updates on to the device? I need the calibration tool as well as all of the other updates. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get them on the tablet. When I mount it to my computer, the micro SD card is not listed as a drive, just the tablet. I also have Windows 7 64 bit on my main computer but my husband's computer still has Windows XP so I even tried to download the main updat file but still can't get it to work. I have called the company but get put on hold then sent to a voice mail to leave a message. All in all, it's not a bad device. I can't get the Market to work. I was able to download one app but then that quit working. I did load Slide and it works fine but doesn't have all the apps that the Market does. I also went to XDA's site but really don't understand how they are getting the device updated. Thanks in advance.

i got one, and im not too thrilled with it. my nexus one is better in every aspect except for screen size.

the screen quality was completely horrible untill it was charged enough. i plugged it in and started using it right away.

i only got pandora and some stupid airhorn app from the market, just to see if it worked. once i found out those two worked, nothing else would download. everything i clicked on would say "downloading" but the progress bar never showed any transfer.

id say its worth the 175+ that it is now, only if you want a cheap tablet for wifi access. typing with out the stylus (that is stuck in the top left corner) is very frustrating.

if you have a small enough laptop or powerful enough phone, id recomend holding off on this thing unless you are savy at all the rooting and hacking stuff.

[Official] Augen Gentouch78 Rooting and Development [Working Android Market!] - xda-developers

IKRAUSE: I typed a reply that blew up. but grab that link, bookmark it and read the WHOLE thing (yes its 40+ pages) cut and paste what you find interesting, they have done GREAT things there. I now wish I'd bought 2 AUgens. As for installations, you BEST bet (not easiest, just best) install the Android SDK to your XP PC and work from there. You will find everything works MUSH better.

There are articles on the Augen Gentouch 78 at Liliputing. It mentions that the Gentouch 78 had the Android Market but it was without permission. I read that future ones won't have it.

There are files for the Augen Gentouch to download from the Augen site that is suppose to recalibrate the screen. There are other files to help patch the USB drivers. It is free to join the support site. Since my Gentouch did not have a users manual, I am hoping to download it from their site but it does not seem to have it, yet.

When I bought my Augen Gentouch 78 from K-Mart in Trenton New Jersey, there was a problem with it charging. The power port was missing a pin but I was able to fix it. I had tried for a week for another to come in to K-Mart but it did not. It was suppose to have two USB cables but mine only had one. I upgraded it with a 4 gig micro sd card. It works nicely.

I am looking for Android apps to try on it. :)

BIg Guy.

I got the manual with mine and it only shows 1 USB cable in the box. SOunds like you got a returned item.

2 things I would do immediately

1) go to AugunUS.com and get the support files, there are 4 to download, one patch and 3 apk's they will help.
2) look earlier in this thread for the post I made to XDA-developers it is a GREAT link that is now over 90 pages and has TONS of great information and how to's

You will get SO much more than your $150 worth if you read that thread!

mindwave, sounds like you still have yours and happy with what the devs able to do so far with it. i'm still within my 30-day return policy, have read through the 80+ pages of xda, applied the augen patches, but have hold off on applying the rest from xda.

i'm waffling because i really like the samsung galaxy tab, but have a feeling it will cost too much. but, if i return the augen, i'll have $150 already toward it.

Not sure about your K-Mart but ours has a 90 return policy and I'm pretty sure this it company policy. I plan to exercise mine because even with these fixes and patches this device just doesn't fit my needs. If it was capacitive I could possibly live with the rest of the shortcomings but the display just makes anything other than video watching and web browsing painful. Forget trying to type anything because it's a PITA. I don't even want to IM on it because I can type 14x faster on my Droid. It's alright and a 2.2 ROM would make a world of difference but ultimately the screen is the hardware part holding it back.

ummm...thanks, but i didn't read anything you wrote as the whole time i was staring at your user profile pict... j/k yes, 90 days would be better...

BADA

I guess it REALLY depens on what you are looking to do with it. When you realize what a PAD is in comparison to a NETBOOK you can see immediately the differences, now for $550 there are some netbooks out there that have had the kayboards stripped off and a touch screen atached, but that brings you right back to big, bulky and slow.

I bought the Augen initially as an alternative to a straight E-reader for my wife. Knowing that no matter WHAT she gets I will end up being her support I am hanging on to it for a few weeks getting it setuop EXACTLY the way I know she'll want it before giving it to her.

However, the more time I spend with it the more I wish I had bought 2. My initial plan was to oder a 10" for myself at months end, but from everythng I have heard, plus NOW people are gettings theirs impounded for improper FCC I'm sriously considering buying another one.

someone on another frum says he has his for sale with all the patches applied.

if I can get it for a good pice, or the same as what I paid for my wifes I will buy it and just stock $ away until spring and then see what shakes out.

either way the sheer amount i have LEARNED has made this a GREAT device for me.

but when I see guys saying "well if it had a capacitive screen"

well if it had a capacitive screen it wouldnt cost under $200 now would it?

people look at their phones and dont realize that the tablets dont have a cell phone company tied to them offse4tting a MAJOR porton of the cost of the HW

my 2 cts

Of course it would and I would GLADLY pay additional for this as it would make the unit substantially more usable to me. I get frustrated by the Augen and how it constantly selects items when you're simply trying to scroll or taking 8 swipes to change home screens or drop down the notification bar and don't even get me started on the nightmare that is typing. I've said on numerous forums numerous times that I realize this stuff costs money and I've even said I would pay twice as much as the Augen for a capacitive display and a few other features that should be standard by now.

Nope, I realize it and am willing to pay. If I could go down to K-Mart today and buy the same tablet in a 10" capacitive display with high capacity battery, HDMI out, external volume control, auto brightness adjust with cameras front and back, ability to charge via USB, a solid version of 2.2 and a few other things I would even pay as much as $400-$500 to get all of that.

$200 or so i think is the right price for a 7" android 2.1 or 2.2 tablet. The Witech A81-E is almost right there. the Augen is cheaper, so lacks options. i'm gonna see what they roll out on 8/20 before i root it and all that. too bad they have that problem with google (why not other android tablets floating around out there right now i wonder?) it has been quite an education, so i'm glad i bought it.

oh, i do hate the kinds that are tied to a service company. i guess that's how they justify a lower initial price for people who want one (they are making a killing off of the smartphone racket).

I think thats what the called, oh wait, I know it, an IPAD

BA, I agree, and if it were not for the fact of the ABSOLUTE hooror stories in the "1st generation" of the tablets I probably would have imported one for my wife, as it is I believe that I finally have it 100% where she needs it (someone in another forum was able to get me the ONLY app I needed from the market, its a freebie, but its ONLY available in the market)

as for why the other have the market, I REALLY think that you would be hard pressed to find too many that actually have it.

Those that do truly have access to Android Market I believe have a hack that just hasnt been found out by Google yet.

Augen being sold in the US was BOUND to get googles attention.

There was a story yesterday of someones Zenithink (i believe) getting confiscated by the feds at the border for NOT being FCC compliant.

the WORSE part of that story is that the vendor listed it as a $25 value to avoid taxes, so now the hopes of the guy ever getting it are probably slim.

me, I would pay $300 for a good 10" tablet that worked was reasonably quick and had access to the google apps.

Right now, I'm waiting another 10 days, but if had to buy today it wold be the A81E or a ZT180

All this is, is a toy to get us Android geeks busy until the real Android tablets start coming out later this year and next year. I'd gladly buy this and put it in the bathroom to replace my circa 1990 Yahtzee game.

You're right! As long as you overlook everything that I'm looking for. Price range $400-$500, Android based, external removable storage, HDMI output, automatic screen brightness, cameras front and rear... blah blah blah. If I wanted an iPad I would buy an iPad. I don't.

Just got mine today (using it post this). I got all patches And updates on turnedoff all animations Android calirated screen. All seems well to start rooting process...I will update...

I've become a Linux user but I'm new to Android, so bare with me.

Wifi was cake to set up. I put in our home network and boom, connected. Remembers everything on start up.

I think the screen is very nice. Good picture. Plays flash very well. Video quality is good.

Buttons on back are a little odd at first, but there's only four, and I've already started to remember what they are without looking. Not a big deal.

We did encounter the app store not working, but a few of you have already said it's being fixed with a patch, so good enough. We'll look into that.

Seems to run maybe 6 hours on a charge before asking to be plugged in. That will probably vary on type of usage. That's more than my laptop goes though, by a long shot.

Overall I think it's extremely cool, and I can't help thinking I should have bought the kid a new Wii game and got this thing for myself. :D
