Auto 3G App

El Presidente

Beware The Milky Pirate!
Hello there, I've had a search about, but can't appear to find any apps that will switch 3G on and off automatically.

I've got APNDroid but wonder if there's anything that will switch 3G on when I open an app that requires an internet connection and will switch it off when I close the app as opposed to me having to do it manually.

From what I've read, JuiceDefender can do it, but I'll be honest and say I found that app more bother than it was worth (it did the exact opposite of what it said the and battery usage was worse with it installed). I'm also led to believe that Green Power can do it, but there are issues with 3G coming back on again apparently.

Any advice or pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Also, apologies if I've missed something that's staring me straight in the face!

Well, since it's a mobile phone it makes sense that 3G is always on. Especially since its coverage is far superior to available WiFi hotspots of course. So why not do it the other way around: install free Auto WiFi Enabler, which locks on to available WiFi routers as soon as you're in range of one.

I think this might do what you want: AutomateIt | AppBrain Android Market

Currently supports the following triggers:
* Application Status Trigger - Triggers when selected application activated or deactivated
Currently supports the following actions:
* Enable/Disable Data Connectivity action - [NOT supported on some devices - see why on developer website]

Or if you want it on and off at a particular time, Power Scheduler is good.

Don't understand what problem you had with JuiceDefender. I swear by it, so if you care to explain what problems you are having I will gladly help. In terms of what you are trying to do, tasker can do it. But JuiceDefender is a heck of alot easier to configure. You can do exactly what you said (enable data for certain apps) and it even has an interactive config that anytime you run a new app it will ask you what you want the phone to do.
